Thanks all!!

Saw the Dr today - he wrote me a prescription for custom biking shoes (with a 'good luck seeing if that can be done'). Turns out he recommended someone I know so I'll have a few conversations with him this week. Have to check with insurance to see what that will still cost. He's not sure of the pain - the knee confused him because it's a little all over though it's already feeling better, should be back on by the weekend the latest. He's not sure which is the lesser of two evils - forcing my knees to be straight against alignment or allowing them to toe-out while pedaling. The nurse got me excited when she told me he rode in the Bike NY ride a few weeks ago but when I threw out terms like 'mashing' he didn't know what I meant. At least he has been on a bike. Wrote a script for PT too if it doesn't go away in a week.

Short term - going to switch to harder bottomed shoes and see what kind of difference that makes. The extenders are in the mail - possibly by the weekend I can get those in too. Also will start looking around for cages. Those shoes are going in the garbage though I may keep them for a few more days for demonstration purposes.

In terms of mashing I actually do very little of it and most of the pain came from spinning - when I did actually apply pressure it went away. I think getting my feet to be parallel to the pedals vs 45 degree angle will help that. Who knows - maybe add a mph to my average ;)

Thanks for posting those jyossarian :D Yeah - that's how it looked on Sunday too!

Again - thanks all, I love this place tons!

You might look at some SKate Shoes (Skateboarding shoes). Thicker sole, stiffer than sneakers, and serve quite well for the SS/FG crowd with clips and straps. ;)

Great accomplishment, G! I must definitely attribute this to your determination and the good company you had. Of course the great sushi and barbeque diet we've been frequenting helped ;)

...and thanks for the acknowledgement; I knew you would make better use of those wheels more than ebay!

[perhaps this next comment needs to go in the event thread, but your experience was so personal, I rather want to post it here]

I also read your post on 5BBC and you are spot on...to provide food to the first 100 (fastest) riders is a real discouragement for future Montalk rides. I know we were talking about the need for the riders that did not get to eat to get a refund, but no refund is enough for finishing a ride like that, the achievement that you made, and then to be deprived of eating.

Also, to hear about the carelessness and damage caused by poor bike transport is inexcusable as that individual suffered a monetary loss for an event where all they wanted to do was just have fun.

Instead, let me make a recommendation. Standards for independant cycling events shouldn't be any different than standards for any other major event; you plan for 100 and cook as though 200 or 300 will eat. Real Macaroni and Cheese is easy to make and a lot less money than what was charged for the ride. Get an independant entity like Times Up! or some other responsible entity to evaluate and verify that the proper preparations have been made (proof of food purchase, transportation arrangements, security, safety, support, etc.). I would gladly pay an extra cost to make sure this happens for all these types of events; kind of a certification, if you will.

I know that many will say that this is an isolated event, but your comments need to be taken quite seriously and action needs to be taken to ensure all the riders, not just the fastest ones, get to have a great time.

Again, many congrats on your achievement, and heal quickly; my drugstore is always available if you have a need ;)

We want pictures!

Why you had a disposable camera and not your digital compact camera I will never know! Then again, I did not take my litte Canon camera either. Not because I didn't want to break it, but because I didn't have any room to take it! Not used to riding without a rack... Seat bag was crammed. Mini Handlebar bag had my windbreaker in it.

A great accomplishment, Air! I wouldn't sign up for 145miles, like, ever! Your hill techniques are astonishing!

Now let's see some pics!

As for the food at the end, no one was happy. The 5BBC ain't happy either. But I'm glad I'm a member and glad for the what the 5BBC is doing beyond the Montauk ride with advocacy and all the rides during the summer.

If Times Up! did a Montauk ride, you would be informed to pack your own recovery meal or plan! We'd likely have a meal at the Lobster Roll! Hey! That's an idea for a ride. Mastic Shirley to montauk with a meal at the Lobster Roll.

Hope to meet more folks on two wheels! I'm riding the ADA Century June 14.
