Southeast - Help with route? Charleston SC to Titusville FL

Hey all,
Im in need of some suggestions for a route from Charleston S.C. to Titusville (Sebaston Inlet really) F.L.

I was thinking about taking 17 south following beside 95 until I hit A1A (Buccaneer Trail) in Yulee
GA and taking that all the way down?

Is this a good idea? better roads? better sights? Things to see.... places to stay? Stealth camping?

A1A in Florida will have you jumping back and forth across brides to get around inlets and the wind coming off the ocean could be a killer, but if you not under any kind of time constraint, it would be a nice ride. Also, you will have to go around the Cape Canaveral area via US 1 or some of the other local roads, which is a hell of a stretch. Then you jump back to the beach by going over the Pineda Causeway south of Patrick Air Force Base at Satellite Beach. Once you get back to the beach at Satellite, Sebastian is just a few more miles down the road.

My sister lives in Satellite and I have wanted to do a couple day tour down there and back to Jacksonville. US 1 is pretty easy riding, but it does have long stretches of nothing and you would have to make sure to water up as you can.

US 17 in South Carolina, between Jacksonboro and Garden's Corner, is dangerous and is under constrcution in Beaufort County. A better route would be SC 65(?) to Walterboro from Jacksonboro., then US 17A. A big hurdle is US 17 runs on I-95 from Point South (exit 33) to Ridgeland (exit 22). You could detour to US 21 to SC 170, and I could shuttle you through Savannah, GA, as there isn't really a bike friendly way into Savannah from South Carolina.

Danger is my middle name! No really thanks for the info, I will be traveling it looks like on Frontage Rd to Ridgeland when it meets up with 17 again. I do have a question for you do they allow bikes on the Talmadge bridge? I am trying to make this ride without any automobiles. Thank you for the offer. if not are there any other options?

Offically, no. However, the local police don't enforce unless you go past the on ramp into downtown Savannah. The next crossing up river isn't very bike friendly, unless you go on a Sunday. Too much truck traffic going into Port Wentworth. Next crossing up river is I-95, then way inland to US 301. I know you don't want to use a car, but I do recommend I drive you through Savannah to Richmond Hill, GA. Savannah can get nasty, its crime rate is above average. US 17 approaching the Talmedge is hazardous and in poor condition. The neighborhoods along US 17 in the Savannah area can be dangerous as well.

As for 17, if you take US 17 from Charleston, take US 21 South in Garden's Corner to Beaufort. Then SC 280 to SC 170. This will take some time and distance off your ride and give you some decent bike lanes. I could even join you while riding.
