I'm looking for an occasional use headlight for a new road bike I'm getting. I've got a PB SuperFlash on the back of my helmet and will probably mount a 2nd SuperFlash to the seatpost of the new bike. I'd like an easily removeable headlight with internal batteries I can use for those rare moments when I'm riding with a group but my ride home alone is at dusk and I need a headlight. I'd also like the unit to have a flash mode so I can use it as an attention-getter when I'm riding alone on weekends (if I'm riding during the week it'll either be commuting to work on my commuter bike or as part of a group ride).

The light needs to be small enough so I can store it in my seat pack and pull it out for those times I need it. The bag will probably be a 75 cu Trek or similar which isn't all that big.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I carry a Petzl Tikka XP LED Headlamp (http://www.rei.com/product/751760) as a backup light, in case my primary DiNotte 600L goes dark.

It's a really nice headlamp with a very bright 1/2 watt LED that's also useful for camping and other activities. And, it has a flash mode that is very noticeable to traffic.

The FENIX L2D is actually pretty small, and as long as it fits in your bag, would be an awesome "backup" light - that might be better than your "main" light! With one twofish lockblock, it takes up minimal space, and sets up in seconds.

+1

It's also very useful off the bike.

Cateye EL 410. $20 at Nashbar.
I have the EL 400 (less bright, but batts last longer) and I love it.
It's not a light to see by, but to be seen.
Can be handlebar or helmet mounted. I prefer helmet so I can direct it at drivers if I feel they don't see me.

Fenix L2d is solid, a little smaller is the L1d.. l2d uses 2-aa batteries, l2d uses 1-aa battery.

Fenix.

Did you see the Dinotte sale thread? $99 headlight is a great deal if you already have rechargeable batteries and a charger.

Those would be the only two choices I would consider for your application. The cheap bicycle lights might work, but the Fenix is not that much more and is versatile.
