The hottest part of Saturday's ride was only 111 on Foothill Blvd., heading west at Lowell at 1:30pm. Why do I need an entire seperate post for a mere temp. reading? Perhaps, I'm bored. Or I didn't really believe it was that hot. Yes, I know it was hot and continues to be hot even right now. But, I only had 6 large bottles of ice water on my ride. Two at the start, two in the middle and two more in the later middle. Plus a sliced pear and a bag of ice in my center jersey pocket. Right on the lower back. I only spent 4 hours in the daylight.
But, it's the first "hot" ride of the year. I wonder when I will break last years 115?

It was close to 90 along the beach route on Saturday. Slightly less on Sunday, but both were perfect. Except for the traffic, that is. It was all about pedaling and moving forward though, so a little traffic didn't crush my spirits. 70 miles logged. (87 including this morning's loop) No complaints.

Yes...Saturday was very hot. Folks were hot at the Bike Expo...
I'm hoping for a nice mild Saturday for the CICLE Urban Expedition into the San Gabriel Valley...
(please, please)

time to get use to it, the season has just started. Just make sure you have plenty of fuel for the rides. I was out there there for about 70 miles in mid day and it was blazing

111? Wow! I rode from home (Upland) to Devore and back. 40 miles. I left at 9:15'ish and returned home at 12:30. Was only 97 when I got home. Later the weather site said 99 DEESGREES!:D. Was hot and I felt it. Stopped on the return at a park for a quick G-Ade and a ClifBar.
What city were you riding in?

That would be my "Saturday In May Ride Around the Verdugos", starring Sun Valley, Burbank, Glendale, La Canada, Pasadena, La Cresenta & Tujunga. So many cities, so little time. It's actually just the sorta usual, ride low cause the Angeles Crest is wicked blazin' ride.
I just cannot get up early. So I take what I get. I got all the vending machines and bicycle friendly donut shops mapped out.

Cool! Gina just told me that a coworker said it was 102 at 10 am down here. Hmmm, maybe I'm wrong about the temps. That would 'splain why I rode like Ricky Ricardo!:roflmao2:

That's funny, I was right there at the Taco Bell at 1:30 trying to cool off, my computer had 111 on it too. I stayed there for 30 minutes then headed up Foothill to Little T. Boy was it hot!

I'm glad it just wasn't me.
However close the sun gets. That's how it works right? I can't wait to do it again.

Here's what I know about temperature guages:
First of all, I have an outdoor thermometer fixed to my southeast window here in Topanga. When the sun hits it directly around 10am and it reads 120F, I know it's because of the direct sun. By noon, in the shade, I know it's reading normal. It was maybe 96 up here today. Same thing applies to just about every outdoor temp guage -- direct sunlight, or radiating heat from a nearby parking lot or roadway (or AC units) will upwardly misrepresent the actual ambient temperature. And I'm guessing the same applies to bike temp guages. Maybe not over-reading by 10 or more degress, but it has to be affected. What do the bike guage manuals say about direct sunlight and misreadings?

Bike temperature guages may misrepresent the actual ambient air temperature due to sunlight or radiant heat but unless you do your cycling in shade 10 feet off the ground they can be a pretty good indicator of what your are actually feeling. I was out on Saturday in Grimes Canyon. Air temp in the shade was about 101 degrees. Out on the road it peaked at 120 :eek: primarily due to the punishing heat radiating off the asphalt. In such conditions I don't give a rats ass what the true ambient temperature is.

Yah, at that temp you just keep moving forward. Or die.
Along with two of my brothers, we raced a mountain bike event called The Traverse, a Warrior Society mtb race in the Cleveland National forest. 44 miles and 8,000 ft of climbing. Over 6 hrs for me and one of my brothers. A check point at 3/4 of the race, had a very large digital thermometer that read 106*. One of the people there said it earlier read 115*. I saw guys starting to cramp after the first 2 hrs. Not sure of the results yet, but my other brother did not finish due to the heat and took a bail out route. He said he saw 20 others bail out too. I will be interesting to see how many bailed.

Or at least a massive migraine :twitchy: .

I cant believe you guys riding in this smoldering heat!!
Riding in the heat is detrimental to your form and morale!!:lol::lol::lol::lol:
Why not skip the bike on these hot days and hit the beach?
You get water massage for your whole body by boogieboarding/surfing and playing in the water, and an excellent rest!
I hated Ontario crits in the middle/end of the summer- it was like puking inside an owen!

I used to spend many days in the water. Now, I tend to stay away due to my perception of pollution. Imagined or real, I would spend much too much time thinking about it to enjoy it.
