i am moving to a city (flagstaff, arizona) that gets a bit more snow than where i live now (prescott, arizona) so i need a winter bike. i was thinking of doing sort of a cross bike kinda thing. what i don't know is this, is there a rim that will take a tire say from 23mm to like 32mm or maybe higher? basically, is a there a rim that in the summer months i could put some 23mm tires on, and when the weather turns south, i could throw some on some bigger tires with more tread?

I think that it is an issue with clearance on the frame when it comes to wider tires sometimes, so you might want to look into that.

I use a set of formula/mavic wheels year-round with different tire widths (23-32mm). They are very durable, even in winter slush. It is, indeed, mostly an issue of frame clearance. You should have room to spare if you plan to run studs and/or fenders as well.

The Jamie Roy is supposed to fit up to 38mm tires, but even with 32mm cross tires, there is not even a bit of fender room.
Hey I am in flagstaff! Grew up in cottonwood. Welcome

Yup, we even had a freak storm a week ago that landed us 3-6 inches and then went on to melt by 2PM.
Another Flagstaff nerd here; you here for NAU or what? Also, they are really good about plowing the roads and laying salt, I rode all winter on 23mm slicks the past couple of years and I only fell once, and that was going like 1/2 a mph in a parking lot.

I'm surprised you can tell by that picture. I had the cross lever on backwards (with the end toward the center) because it was the wrong size clamp to fit the center bulge.
Unless you are talking about the brake hoods...? I hate riding drops without the brake hood position.

They don't lay salt here on most roads, just cinders :(.
