Any comments, tips, advice, resources on the net? I have 5 days to ride around. Anyone have a particular route that they were fond of?

Regards,

John

I did a short tour on Vancouver Island, Saltspring, and Galiano in 2004, and loved it. If you are camping, beware that the only campground on Galiano is about 12 km from the ferry. Check out the (I think it was called) Hummingbird Pub on Galiano. In any case, it's the only pub. They have a free hourly bus in the evenings to and from the campground. To get from Saltspring to Galiano I used the Sea Taxi, which is just a small boat, but they let you take your bike for no extra charge. It only runs when school is not in session though (July and August) because during the school year, it is the school bus.

I also did the road from Nanimo down to Crofton (Highway 1/1A) on Vancouver Island. Some of that is beautiful, and pretty fun. There are great places to eat and drink all over the place.

My tour was pretty lazy, but if you felt like it, you could cover almost all the roads on a couple of those islands in 5 days. If you can find one, it would probably pay off to have a map that shows relief so that you can manage your elevation. You won't avoid climbing completely, but you can adjust your route to reduce your really stiff climbs. Some of the roads are incredibly steep.

I hope you have a great trip. Let me know if you have any other specific questions and I'll do my best to help out.
