Anyone from NW Michigan?

I would like to put some HHH training rides, or a BF group ride together for the BF crowd here in NW Michigan.

So where are all the Michigan BF roadies?

I tied last year with no luck I think I am the only person in the BFNWMC chapter:cry:

I am out of Boyne City, but leelanau has some good climbs and could be a meeting place.

I do own a retail business and summers can get busy so give me some notice and maybe we can ride.

Doug, I am ALL IN FAVOR (and we are unanimous in that!) of a BFSEMC! Where are you located?


Rochester Hills. I'm not all that familiar with the Ann Arbor area for bicycling. But I did run the Dexter-AA half marathon last year and would like to get down there someday with my bike and ride the Huron River Drive (under better conditions than we had for that race!).

To be honest, I'm pretty new to road biking and not much of a group rider. I'm also more likely to be found riding on one of our rail-trails (such as the Macomb Orchard Trail) or burning laps around Stoney Creek Metropark than out on the main roads. I gave up motorcycling after 35 years partly because I felt less safe than I used to on the road, and on a bicycle I feel a lot less secure than I did on a m/c.

That said, I have done a number of organized rides where "safety in numbers" tends to apply. The Metro Grand Spring Tour down your way is one, and the Peach of a Ride and Blue Water Ramble are out this way. Maybe we could meet up someday for one of those.

I was also thinking about doing the Shoreline West tour, but scheduling issues will keep me out of it this year. Instead I'm doing the Sunrise Adventure ride out of Rogers City next month.

One last thought: if we "organized" a BFSEMC group, I'd have to go with the geezer sub-chapter, as I'm 61 and wouldn't even think about trying to keep up with the young bucks! ;)

My bro-in-law lives in Norton Shores right next to Muskegon. I do ride my bike when we go up there to visit. West Michigan lakeshore offers really nice biking opportunities I have found out.

Doug, What are you doing this weekend? I'm going out riding at least twice. Last night I did about 22 mi in the lower Huron metroparks, Haggerty Road south of I-94. Saturday my wife and I will probably go AA-Dexter-Chelsea, so please consider joining us. We're in our mid-50s, too, and I am visibly not as fast as the 30s/40s in the area. I'm better than I was a few years ago, though! The Ann Arbor area has great cycling.

MGST is past for this year, but there are a lot of other good ones. One really well-set up ride is One Helluva Ride, which leaves from Chelsea and loops around the area north of there, running through Hell in its century version. I have been planning to do the OHR century this July 12, but I'm way behind on my training. I'm a comfy 35-40 mi now, and need a few more 3-hour rides.

I would be glad to co-chair teh geezer subchapter of the BFSEMC with you, and lead the fitting/tuning committee. I swing a mean tape measure!

I'm thinking about the Blue Water this year, would love to bike in Canada!

Road riding does not scare me. I learned to ride a bike in Chicago, and when I was 10 my dad said "big boys ride in the street," so I started as a road rider in a major city as a 10 year old. I rode motorcycles for a few years in the city, up to 10 months a year while in college. I have no off-road experience other than MUPs.

Huron River Drive is not in very good shape for cycling. As a matter of fact, there's a stretch of it that's now closed for the next two years due to construction. Other sections of the road are woefully bad pretty much all along it's length. It's too bad, really; it's the premier cycling venue in this area and it's barely rideable. Shame on Washtenaw County that they can't get this repaired.
