I started cycling about 2/3rds of the way through the summer last year. Just enough to get a taste and to know that I wanted more. I bought a new ride this spring but the weather has been lousy so I've only got 200 miles on it so far. I need to set some goals to work towards for the season, maybe you guys could help?

Here's what I have so far:

1- Metric Century, I'm already registered for one June 14th.

2- Century (I'd like to do a couple this summer really)

3- Duathlon (sprint, there's one in Sept in my neck of the woods).

To achieve these goals what should I look at for weekly mileage totals? I can keep a decent pace (17mph+) over 30+ miles so I'm not worried about the metric, it's just a matter of doing it. How about a mileage goal for the year? Is 1k reasonable? Thanks in advance.

I'm already well on my way.
For those who don't know, I have E COPD and some nasty after effects from agent orange.
I had double bypass surgery last november and made myself the promise I'd come back stronger and faster.(10 days out of surgery I walked my first mile)
Well, I'm well into the 16mph average and 40 milers don't seem much of a problem (add another 10-18 onto those rides as I ride in to the ride and home from it)and it sure is nice to see what the view fron the front of the pack is (lol)
Goal: At least one century.
At least 2 metric centruys
bump my average ride speed to 16/17 for every A ride
get 3K with the club
get under 210 pounds.

A good goal, especially with a user nic of 'Spartan', would be not to let weather keep you from riding. ;)

1000 for the year is extremely doable. I'm up in Indiana and have 1804 for the YTD so far. ;) I'm not even in the Mile MOnster category this year either. ;) That's for folk like 10wheels, who's actually got over 3600 for the YTD. :p

Fair enough, in my defense I didn't have proper gear for cold weather riding. I've since gotten some and have been doing some early morning rides.

1000 miles should be easy if you hit your other goals. You already have 200 miles in plus 62 for the metric plus 200 for your centuries and you are at 462 without any additional training. I predict you will hit at least 2000 this year.

I started last year in the middle of August and finished 2007 w/ 1001 miles and I didn't have a ride longer that 25 miles. I will hit 1000 for 2008 tomorrow with a goal of 2500 for the year. My other big goal is to do a metric this year. I am planning a 1/2 imperial century for Memorial Day as my next big ride.

Just be persistent and have fun.

I've set myself up with three goals for this year.

The first is to try to ride in a local event called "Tour De Brew" on July 5th. I beleive the ride is roughly 35 miles, stopping at many breweries and brew pubs along the way. Should be fun, but I don't know if I'll be up for it by then.

The second is a bit more open ended, but I'd like to ride out to my parents place and back on a weekend. It's only about 25 miles (on the interstate, by car), or 35ish for the route I've picked out to ride, but I'll consider it a milestone as my first "week end tour".

My third is tenatively set for Labor Day weekend or a few days before (maybe take weds, thurs, friday off. Essentially, another week end tour, just a bit longer. Ride back out to my parents place, stay the night, then hop on the Cedar Valley trail and ride out to Cedar Falls (about 50 miles, I think), and then make the trip back.

We'll see how it goes.

The brewery tour, you need to watch the sampling, in fact your best to skip sampling all together. Beer not only numbs the senses needed for riding, but causes one to eliminate more water then you obtain from the beer, so one can easily become dehydrated.

I'm not cycling anywhere near the distances or average speeds that you are, but I'm expecting to do 1k miles this year, so yours sounds easily doable.

My major goal is aiming to be able to cycle the 23 miles to my parents by the end of the season - assuming I go for the 10% increase per week (currently doing 5.5/6 miles long ride, plus daily commute), this should be early September. If I can keep up my current rate, 1k should come in early october...
Can you tell I'm a stats junkie? It helps keep me motivated, sooo....

Good luck with the metric!

Thanks. I have a feeling you'll get that distance to your parents sooner than you think. Once I got rolloing last year increases came at a greater rate than 10%. Today I took a turn around the resevoir at 18.3mph (rolling hills) and continued of for an additional loop through the neighboring towns. The wind really kicked up so it slowed me down in spots but I had a steep decline that lead to my fasted speed to date (41.3mph, yikes). With the additional 10miles onto my 18mile loop I averaged 18mph for the day. I may take a day off tomorrow and do my first group ride Sunday (the same resevoir).
