BMX - for the brakeless...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

how do yall stop?!
I ride a track bike, so I already used to not stopping, running reds, swerving all over the place and all dat bang bang..
but, for this brakeless freewheel ish...'s abit different...I mean...you really only got your feet and hands...so...I just built this BMX bike, and haven't put a brake on it....
for yall who go brakeless...
how do YOU stop? like going down a steep hill for example? foot on rear tire? foot on front tire? hand on front tire? feet on ground?
lemme know, cause I know a lotta yall ride without brakes

This has been asked many times before.
It's all about the foot on the tire or on the ground.

No way, jam your foot into the front tire as hard as you can, trust me, you'll stop.

mini champs method is the most fun.

it's all about the powerslide. what also works good is running into something big.
seriously tho, i've been brakeless 8 years and would probably have to ask how to stop WITH brakes. bmx bikes are low enough that you can always as a last resort just hop off the dang thing. otherwise, foot on the back tire is win.

foot in front tire... like mini said, real hard. you'll stop PDQ. at least it always works, unlike brakes.

foot on back tire is the brakes i choose for steep downhill speeds. foot on front tire at slower speeds and more level surfaces. but thats just me seems to be easiest.

Try shoe goo... or the DC's with the different compound rubbers for different hardnesses in different places

or you could just go flyin down the hill... in my opinion thats more fun

1. push your bike down the hill :)
2. lock up the tire and skid it. you'll slow down faster and wear the tire instead of the shoes--which is a lot cheaper to replace.

I would except there is a sharp turn at the end and it's like a 45 degree angle hill and cars. . .
Doesn't shoe goo just glue shoe parts together? It's like a serious hole on the bottom past the rubber:D First day brakeless too, I need a shoe for each day of the week.

You just do. End of story.
just put on a back brake if your going to be riding in traffic or down steep hills.
most of these answers are just dumb.

That's the point. Maybe he doesn't want to put brakes on. And we were fooling around. It's something we do in the BMX section.

My shoe almost has a hole in it to. Foot in back tire or scrape your feet in the ground

my friend burned all the way to his insoles before he filled it and then got new shoes. it was pretty funny cause every time he slipped his pedals, his foot started to come out of the bottom of his shoe. it was dope.

wearing a hole through a shoe to the point your foot comes out is a slow process. your friend needs to mow lawns or something for some shoe-cash

I'm thinking about getting a metal plate thing, like what they use in construction to prevent nails going through a certain part of the studs, on the bottom of my shoe.
Apparently I stop by rolling on my shoulder after running into things and going over the bars at full tilt. Ouch. :/ Call me a sissy, but I'm going back to brakes (in a week or two when I can ride again)

haha true that. plus they make your shoes way wicked heavy. just fill it in with shoe goo. cheaper that way.

It's easy.
1. Stop being in such a hurry, only go as fast as you need to. If you're busting a TOTALLY RAD MOVE, go the right speed so you won't carry too much speed when you're done. If you're just riding somewhere, chillax-ate. You'll get there when you get there, without having to stop fast all the time.
2. If you're going down a long hill, walk. Or find some grass, kittens, puppies, piles of bull**** or something like that to slow you down by running over it.
3. Don't drag your feet all the time, just sit down, push back against the ground while you walk along with your feet and nothing will get worn out.
But I have a pair of Etnies Arto shoes that have been my riding shoes for 2 years, and the soles are still fine (although they don't cushion your feet as much). I've done a ****load of footjams since it's like the only thing I can do, stuck them in the tire all the time to stop, drug them on the ground, etc. Get some of those.

just ride balls to the wall and learn how to control your bike, turn as fast as you need to when you need to and hop over anything in your way.

never ever stop, just avoid or go around whatevers in your way
if it's at a skatepark, it's super easy to scrub speed on quarter-pipes
I run a freecoaster too so I can't slow down when I roll backwards either.
