I have looked all over the SP website and cannot find much information about the hike/bike camping site(s) at Samuel P Taylor park.

Does anyone know anything about these sites? How many are there? First-come first-serve? What happens if you show up on your bike and they don't have a place for you, do they turn you away?

I'll let you know as soon as I can get a hold of my Camping/Backpacking the Bay Area book which is at home.

It's $3 a night for hiker/bikers. No reservations, first-come, first-served. Supposedly a ten-person maximum; I don't know how strictly they enforce that. If they do, I guess you head back to SF for the night! Maximum stay is two nights.

Or just make sure you get there early, so you're amongst the first ten to check in. I've never camped there, but have camped at the hiker/biker camp in Bodega Dunes -- and even on weekends in the summer, getting a spot has not been a problem.

OK, so from what you are saying ten tents can set up in one hike/bike campsite?

It's not clear from my post, but with the ten-person limit, I was talking about Samuel P. Taylor Park specifically. I.E., if you call up the park and talk to a ranger, s/he will tell you the hiker/biker section has a 10-person capacity. So if you're the eleventh to show up that, officially, at least, you're out of luck. Unofficially, I'm not sure how willing they are or are not to bend the rules.

The general rule for bike-touring at state parks, however, is get there as early as you can, to make sure you get a spot. If you have more specific questions, just call up a ranger. SP Taylor's # is 415-488-9897. The rangers are usually pretty helpful.

ConstantRider pretty much covered it. My book also says they allow "En route" campers who only stay one night but you're not allowed to enter until 9:00pm and must vacate by 9:00am of you're going to be an En Route camper.
