OK, I know everyone's nose runs when they ride in the cold, but this is getting ridiculous!

My nose has been running so much, I feel like I'm going to dehydrate through my nose! I wipe on my sleeves, my gloves, whatever, it keeps going. It is driving me to distraction while I ride! My nose actually gets chapped after one cold ride!

Any suggestions??

Stuff kleenex or something up your nose. Blow your nose extremely well. Get a towel and attach it to your handlebars to wipe yourself with :D

Snot-rockets?

What Chris said.

I'm assuming you know what a snot rocket is. If not....
1) Get well clear of anyone you're riding with or they're gonna be PISSED at you
2) Plug one nostril and tilt your head so the other nostril is slightly higher than the plugged one
3) Exhale SHARPLY through your nose
4) Watch your snot rocket away in a beautiful arc to land far away from you (and hopefully not on your back)
5) ??????
6) Profit!!

Oh, and be considerate of cars that may be on your left when letting a snot rocket fly.

The reason your nose is running are due to the following reasons.

1. Your head is uncovered
2. Your ears are uncoverd
3. Your face is uncovered
4. Your hands are uncovered.

Once the temperature drops below 40 degrees your head and hands need to be covered. A helmet is NOT enough. Once the temperature drops below 30, your ears need to be covered and anything below that PLEASE WEAR A SKI MASK! Some people like myself start wearing ski masks by the time the temp drops below 40 degrees.

The ski mask should cover your nose and mouth. Don't wait until your sick before you start to "dress up". You forget that a cyclist who rides at 40 degrees is actually riding close to 30 degrees because of the wind chill factor.

Very true. I almost pegged one on a ride the other day. I'm sure that would've done a lot for cyclist/motorist relations.

I actually pegged one just outside of Gatton (don't ask me what I was doing there) six months ago. Quite deliberately as I recall.

I don't have a problem with the cold but I do have alergies. Take some pseudoephidrine, it will dry your sinus' and open up your lungs.

Get a prescription for Atrovent, generic name is Ipratropium. It's the only product that has ever worked for my runny nose.

Cold weather is an irritant to some people and causes the kind of drainage you're talking about. I'm a skier and I'm usually covered to the hilt but my nose still runs constantly. Atrovent stopped all of that.

I did not find an over the counter medicine that helped.

I finally got to the allergist and I'm going to try atrovent. Thanks for all the ideas!

Mine runs and the coler it is,the more it runs and none of that stuff helps.I just blow it out or use a paper towel.

Just blowing it does not cut it. I do snot rockets, let it drip all over my frame, soak my gloves and my sleeves, and end up with a chapped nose in one ride! It's absurd! It's hard to enjoy the ride if all you are doing is trying to keep up with your nose! I used the atrovent today, and it still ran, but not nearly as much, and I had a great ride!

One aspect of runny nose I hate is when you get off the bike and the problem seems chronic..Blow it once, twice, three times and it does not stop. Quickly returns...Seems endless supply.
Can't carry enough Kleenex. And then you have to go into stores or whatever. Must have something to do with temperature differentials between the outside and warmer internal body temperature.

Any suggestions??All of the above plus:
I found a little gismo that I like. It's a small elastic sleeve that holds a chapstick tube and clips to the zipper pull of my jacket. Makes zipping up and down faster and keeps the chapstick handy. I us the chapstick on my nose more than on my lips. I get lip balm with sunblock and smear it all over anything that the balaclava does not cover.

Rub some Vaseline under and on your nostrils before heading out for a ride, and reapply using chapstic or carmex or whatever you usually carry. It'll help with the chapping.

For some people cold is an irritant. Like an allergy but caused from the environment. Atrovent solved my problem. Can't ski or bike without it.

I know it sounds stupid, but try something like a clothes-pin or one of those things swimmers use to pinch their noses close and then just breath through your mouth. That'll probably prevent the cold from getting to your nasal cavity as well.
I find that when it's really cold out, I'm breathing 90% through my mouth anyway.

just go fast and take yer pills and bring alot of kleenex. faster so you don't have to wipe as many times.
