I stopped at the LBS today and picked up the new bike...Trek 520. I love it! Of course it's black:love:

It's currently resting in the family room since it's cold in the garage:) I still have a few things to do before I take it for a ride. I need to add the water cages, tool kit, trunk bag and adjust the seat. I'll give the Bontrager saddle a chance but I have a Brooks in the garage that I think will look good on this one.

I've decided to sell the 1800C as I've only put 50 miles on it in the last two years. No sense in letting a good bike sit in the garage. Besides it's just a tad too big for me:(

Here it is......

Nice Bike, congratulations! I thought the 520 came with barcons, did you have them swapped out for brifters?

Yes, that was one of the changes the LBS made for me. They also changed the cranks, installed a shorter stem and seat post with a different angle. I rode it around the cul-de-sac this evening and it felt great.....just need to raise the seat.

I plan to take it on XOBA this year and around Lake Erie later this summer. I'll probably never do fully loaded tours as I enjoy having a SAG available to carry most of my stuff:o Who knows.....I may change my mind. After all, I never did any camping until I started doing supported tours:)

What's XOBA? All the way around Lake Erie? How far is that? My mother told me I was born in Willowick and we lived walking distance from Lake Erie, but I don't remember it.

Beverly, don't be too surpised if it becomes your favorite ride.

My 520 and I will going on Oklahoma Freewheel in 17 days, but who is counting? Maybe tomorrow I'll post pictures of my new water bottles. They're really fast.

XOBA is the "Across Ohio Bike Adventure". I did it last year and enjoyed it.

I think the distance around Lake Erie is 700+ miles. We'll be starting near Detroit, MI, traveling through Canada and returning to Ohio. We don't know if we'll have time to get back to MI as we have a couple riders who still work. But we'll be going as far as we can before time runs out. We also plan to spend a day in the Niagara Falls area to do some sight-seeing. We're in no rush:) None of us have been to the Rock n' Roll museum in Cleveland so we might spend a day there then head back to SW Ohio.

Is yours the olive green? I have a friend with the olive green and I really like it.

Not to be indelicate, but, I call it "vomit green."

It's OK. Kinda dorky. I like black better (In fact, during the winter, I had so much grit from commuting in the rain that it almost *was* black for a couple of weeks).

In addition to the fenders (which I need in Seattle), the favorite accessory on my 520 is the kickstand. First time I've had a kickstand since I was a kid, and I love it on this bike. It's such a practical bike; putting a kickstand on it seemed like the natural thing to do. This is the one I got; one of the nifty kinds that mounts on the chainstay:

http://www.amazon.com/Greenfield-Stabilizer-Mount-Alloy-Kickstand/dp/B000AOA434/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1211344228&sr=8-3

Here's a little pic; you can see the crankset is not stock and a couple of years ago the stock shifters were bar end shifters.

What crank did you get?

It has the same rings - 50-39-30 but we changed the length from 170 to 175's. I had problems with the 170's on the Madone so I decided to change these, too.

The LBS will be selling the original cranks and a few other parts from the Madone for me on Ebay. I don't like selling on Ebay (just buying:)).

Beverly, did they change the brakes to cantilevers? Or did the LBS install travel agents on the V-brakes in order to work with the brake/shifters?

Great choice!

Good move on the brifters too.

I would ditch that boat anchor (Bontrager) seat and go with the Brooks. You will never look back. I don't know why Trek even bothers putting that crappy seat on their bikes....

Very nice. As you buy more accessories keep showing us. I just bought a front rack for my touring bike (it was on sale at performance and a friend was going there). Now all I need to do is buy a touring bike . I'm thinking commuting and maybe some light touring. From the looks of your bike, I think you have made a wise choice.

I've changed the Bontrager saddle on the other Treks and I'm sure this one will be gone soon, too. I evidently don't have a BB (Bontager butt) since none of them have worked for me:(

Nice bike Beverly and you'll enjoy the touring compared to the beating the highway all the time, with your sports/road bike. I did look a them, but when I bought my Jamis I couldn't handle the drops yet. One thing you may want to do is get a different set up in front. That bike is really geared to high for a lot of hilly areas. They may swap them out now because it's still new. Anyway good luck with the new ride.

We'll be starting the ride August 16th:)

We're using Adventure Cycling maps. We'll be following sections of their Lake Erie Connector, Northern Tier and Underground Railroad maps.

I took it out for a club ride this morning:) We did the regular 30 mile ride to a restaurant for lunch. Of course it started raining about a mile into the ride but that didn't stop us.

I've removed all the plastic reflectors, put the Terry touring saddle and trunk rack from the 1800C on it and adjusted the seat. It rides like a dream especially on the wet roads.

A couple more pictures before it got wet and dirty. I'll be taking it out in the morning....maybe I'll get another picture of it with the trunk bag.

Thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't noticed it.

I have almost 100 miles on it and I love it. I haven't had a chance to try it on hills but hope to get that done within the next week or two.
