View Full Version : splitting the hing of my U-style folder

I want to completely separate my old folder so I can de-rust, strip, and repaint (or maybe powdercoat) it, but I've hit a snag when it comes to the hinge. I can't tell if it's one piece or not. If it is, I don't see how to remove it without a hacksaw, and if I do that, I don't know how to replace it. Any thoughts?

Maybe drive the pin out? Mine had a pin with a circlip on the bottom- yours looks like it was swaged on, at least the top does. If the bottom is the same, it's probably time for the hacksaw and a search for a suitable replacement...

It looks from the photo that the hinge pin is a solid shaft that has been peened over on the end. You can carefully file off the peened end, or you can drill out the shaft until the peened end is gone, and then drive out the pin. Replace with a hardened bolt of appropriate size.

That's probably the way to go. I was hoping that I was just missing something, that maybe one end was a threaded cap and I just couldn't see it, but that doesn't seem likely. I was hoping to get it out without destroying it, but I guess if I file it, then I will at least have the option of popping the original back in temporarily while I find a replacement.

But I guess I also need to figure out how a replacement pin would stay in place. I guess this part wasn't meant to be taken apart.

Replacement BOLT, not pin. You replace the pin with a hardened bolt. The bolt is secured by a nut, best is one with nylon in it.

Use a dremel tool with a little cut off head on it and carefully grind off the eening and it'ss drive olut OK. You can replace it with a hardened bolt. I'd recommend an aircraft bolt. Take the old pin down to any airport where they work on airplanes and pick out the size and length you need. The' pin'part of it will be without threads and the bolt itself hardened steel.

Right. A shoulder bolt.

Ok, much like the one they use to connect the "shock absorber" on full suspension bike.

Excellent. Thanks for the pointers. I wasn't sure how/if I could replace it if I destroyed the original pin. But I also didn't see how I could do a decent restore without taking that pin out. I wonder if the airport will just let me poke through their parts?

Thanks again everybody.

What is it? Do I have a link to it on my AtoZ? If not, can I please have the marque & some detail pics?

Happy hinging! Chop!

It's a "Rog Sport" from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It doesn't seem to be on your list, and it's not the only Rog bike mentioned on the bike forums, so you might do a search and see if the others show up, too. I believe this is the only "Sport" model that's been mentioned, but, in looking at pictures, I don't really see much, if any, difference between models.

Photos of mine are here: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=416911

If you need more detailed photos of any of the markings for your list, let me know. Right now it's just a stripped down frame, and once I get this pin out, those decals will be gone along with the paint.
