My wife and I are planning a 900km tour this summer on our tandem. We will be pulling a BOB and was wondering for all you in the know if we should carry a spare tire for the trailer.

Thanks

If you start with a new tire and most of the ride is on pavement, I wouldn't worry about it. I rode the Great Divide route (2500 miles, mostly on dirt) without a spare tire. Those small tires seems to last a long time. I use a Primo V-Monster.

I use a BOB and I carry my spare tyre under the trailer tied on with ziplock ties.
It keeps it out of the way , but the downside is that you cannot use the underside of your trailer as a table.

I pulled my home built BOB clone about 2,000 miles last summer and the tire shows very little wear. I put Slime in the tire and carry a spare tube. There is very little weight on a trailer and I expect flats to be a rare ocurrence. Plus, you can pick up a 16" tire for about eight bucks just about anywhere you can find a local hardware store or small town co=op--or buy a tire from some little kid riding her "two wheeler." :)

I would carry an extra tire if you have room. The B.O.B. trailer has a tire size that is uncommon for most bike shops.

Well, when I browsed bike shops on tour, I seemed to see quite a few that stocked 16 inch tires. And in the US, what is the worst that can happen? You have to hitch a couple cities to get one? I would go with no spare for the BOB. Though I have busted one on tour, I easily found a replacement. Hopefully, if some freak piece of metal spears your tire like it did mine, you can try to use creativity to patch it until you get to the next tire. If your tire is starting to wear out, which it probably won't on that tour, you can just replace it before the worst happens.

Peace and Good luck

Take a spare. You are on a tandem and pullling a trailer. you won't notice the extra pound . Even though it just the USA, you are in a foriegn country and in unfamilar surroundings. You are also responsible for the safety and comfort of the stoker. If that stoker is a spouse you know what will happen if you don't have the spare tire!
