Another set of Big Apples?
Racers?
other?

I've got 10,000km on my R20's rear Big Apple and it's still OK for more. Front one shows no signs of wear as to be expected. Are both yours worn out, or just the rear? I would move the front one to the rear and get a new one for the front.

:eek::eek::eek:
At that wear rate I'm surprised Schwalbe sell any...
I've just put a pair on my folder, they're so good I don't think I'd replace them with anything else, although the Schwalbe Kojack looks kinda sporty. Too sporty for anything other than tarmac though.

I'm running Odyessy Frequency G's on my R20. Love em. At $20 apiece the price was right! The skinwall version is also available now.

How many miles did you have on the Big Apples? And what size are they, 16" or 20"? I ask because my front tire, a 16 x 2" Big Apple, has about 2000 miles on it now, during which I've gone through three rear tires: a 16 x 1.5" Schwalbe Marathon and two 16 x 1.35 Primo Comets. To be fair, the Marathon and one of the Comets were already a little worn before I installed 'em.

My Big Apples are 20x2 and I have no idea how many miles are on them.
I don't have a computer.
I just wanted to see if there's anything better. Are Supremes better?
If not, a new set of Apples (howdooya like THEM apples?)
Oh, for the record, it's only the rear tire for now, but it's too worn to
safely go on the front side.
Cheers

$60 in 700 size.

That's a lot more than many car and pickup truck tires with 100 times the material in them.

I like my Maxxis Hookworms.
Since we're talking Big Apples, maybe you guys can give me your opinion...
I rode over a nail with mine on Monday. Annoyingly, the point of the nail was bent slightly, and poked into my sidewall. I pulled it out and looked at the hole. Really, its like a millimeter, and with the new tube inflated, it doesn't seem to stretch or open or anything. Do I really have to replace the whole tire? I will cry. Its only two months old.

You should be okay if the hole is very small and the tube doesn't go through. Put a glueless patch on the inside of the tire just to be sure. I had a very similar thing happen with my big apples, just very bad luck. The second day I took the bike for a ride I got a bad puncture that cut about a 3 mm slash in the tire. Nothing I tried worked, the tube just kept poking through and popping, I eventually had to replace the tire. Ya, so now I have a completely useless brand new big apple tire. Pretty sad.
Loch: Have you tried a tyre boot?

That's a good idea, thanks. I hope I have better luck than you did! ;) Or maybe I'll try a boot...hmmm...

I even bought some of those Park TB-2 boots. They would work for a while, but the hole was either just a little too big or in a bad spot, it eventually gave way to the pressure (each time the hole would get a little bigger too).
A boot would probably work nicely for you Caaah, but might be more than required, which isn't really a bad thing :).

Those were exactly the ones I was thinking of getting. I shall head to the LBS now. :)
Just an update:
The boot worked perfectly. And I painted on a thin coating of liquid electrical tape (3M makes it) on the outside over the tiny hole. Pumped em up to 55psi and ridden three days. The hole hasn't expanded at all yet. Whew! Hopefully it lasts.
FWIW... I got too many punctures on the Big Apples that came with my Matrix. I've had much better luck with the various models of Bontrager Hardcase on various bikes.
I currently have a pair on the Matrix I don't like much (it's one of the "comfort" models, and too big and slow), but I'm itching to put Bontrager Satellite Elite Hardcases on it as soon as I find an excuse.
Hmmm...I hadn't heard of those...I'll have to check them out. How's the ride? Do you ride over pavement with tons of potholes with them?

NYC rush hour traffic.
Though to be fair, I recently moved to where I can take a bike path most of the way. But before that, I used them regularly on a 26-mile round-trip commute on Queens Boulevard and down 2nd Ave with no punctures. The Big Apples failed something like three times in two months.
I do my best to avoid glass and potholes, but sometimes the choice is between eating a pothole and getting doored.
As for the ride, they feel pretty much like the Big Apples to me. YMMV.

Derrrr. I didn't look at your location first
26mi! Wow. Mine is only 17 (Park Slope to midtown).
Well, if I do get more punctures with the Big Apples, I'll definitely try those. Thanks!
You take the Brooklyn Bridge? I like that ride.
Though I have to say the GW (which I now live right at) is my favorite bridge to ride over:

There are no bridges on my commute anymore. The cherry blossoms along the Hudson are nice, but my hill-climbing ability has totally tanked.
I was taking the Manhattan Bridge, but now I'm doing the Brooklyn Bridge to Chambers to the Hudson since I figured out that the greenway saves me time even though its a little out of the way. And, as you mentioned, its dang pretty ;)

I was too optimistic. The tire went slowly flat over the last couple days. I haven't taken it apart yet to see what pinched the tube, but I'm guessing its the end for that Big Apple.

The Big Apples aren't puncture resistant enough. I had a flat today
through the tire and a super thick slime tube. :twitchy:
And the slime did nothing but make noise and a mess :wtf:
The Marathon Plus looks like my solution.
