Mountain Biking - Well Heres Your Problem... (lol)(pics)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Well I was riding today at Thomson. Was going down hill, went to bunny hop a root, landed in a small rock bed type thing and the R.D caught the spoke and this is what happend... had to carry the bike out.
The hanger. deraillur, and 2-3 spokes are screwed.
Someone I know though is willing to give me his old Deore, so it'll be an upgrade part.
RIDE HARD! BREAK LOTS! GET DIRTY!
YEA!

I think it just needs a little lube and it'll be good as new.
Just to let you know I'm also in the process of ordering IRC Mythos II XC tires.
I don't think new tires would keep this from happening...do you?:roflmao2:
You need to think about more chain tension and high limit screw adjustment. (or a new RD)

were the gears on your RD rusted on a bike you bought in Jan or just picture glare? Lube the new one.
That is kind of your friend with the deore, it will make the repairs cheap with only spokes, hanger, and chain

bummer dude. Feel your pain. Had a branch/limb decide to make my XT RD a two-piece unit once. Nice long hike back to the truck...
Sounds like you'll be back in business soon though, good deal.

Just don't take any stickers off your bike and you should be safe from catastrophic failure.

Yeah. It's a little bit bent. I bet it's because of the LBD's. Wow. That sucks.
I had stick catch in my chain and biff the hanger in November. Bent the Der. cage too but I took the pulleys out and hammered the plates back into shape. Works like new.
Usually I carry a chain tool but for some reason I wasn't that day, so I had to coast out. Mostly downhill, just kinda slow. First snow of the year too, so kind of a bad ride.
that sucks
what were you doing when it happened? or was that already covered...

I had this happen on a 4300, My first bike. A stick went in the spokes and as it came around it mangled the deraileur and hanger. I just bent it back with my hand as best I could, and rode out. ( I had about three gears) Took it to the shop where I bought it, they straightened the hanger, slapped another cheapo deraileur on it and away I went. They didn't even charge me anything. Hell I even told them a stick got in there. They are a great bunch of guy's. I've been going back ever since!

I've never seen anyone break as much bike stuff as Cheeto does. He's like Darla from "Finding Nemo". :) (Can you tell I have a kid?)

Chris F hate to break your parade, but its DORY!!!! the blue female fish with yellow?

Anyways, I ordered the tires... (YES they didn't cause the problems, but I hate the ones I got now... couldnt beat the price of the Mythos, only 14.00 a piece.)
Man, he not only gave me deore RD, he gave me Deore shifters and an alivo FD...
NO THATS NOT RUST ON THE CASETTE!!!! Thats a new cassette, its jsut really dusty here in GA right now, and it was poor lighting.
But heh, atleast I'm riding lol.

Agreed. Book was the jam.
Oh Chris just owned me... I forgot about the crazy kid.
Eh maybe in the beginning i was hard on bikes, This was just a freak accedent... I NEEDED UPGRADES anyway LOL
I cleaned off the deore RD today, (bit dusty/muddy) its so perty lol.... its not XTR stuff but, its better than the huge POS I had, got a lot lower of a profile. the cogs are way smaller and everything.
I would throw the Deore shifter on, but I have the brake/shifter combo and I dont want to buy new brake levers yet.
I've decided to get rid of the Shimano 050 Top swing FD thing and im going to put the Alivio on it.
Cant wait for all these stuff to get installed, and then when I get my new tires... and I'm going to see about a crank set.... YAY!

Waste of time...lose the FD completely. Ed won't be happy until the whole world is 1x9 like Ed.

Just go SS. Then you won't ever have another derailer problem.
I was thinking of a single speed, but for now I like my gears lol.
Those SS fully rigid guys are crazy.
My derialure was huge and ulgy looking anyway, its time to get something that will actually work.
and, I got it for free so I cant complain.
I looked closer at the damage, I have a chunk of metal missing out of my frame (hidden by the RD in pics)
the RD clearly shaved my frame... Should I be overly worried as this could be a possible fail point, or just keep riding? I can't clearly see how bad it is until I go to replace everthing.

I've been through a few Dear Der. along the way. It seems right now I'm having trouble slicing tires. I flatted a rear last night and cut the sidewall on the front.........I'm such a hack!

Your hanger looks bent.
The hanger, is bent at about a 40-45 degree angle lol.
(pics dont show as much as it really is.)
The guy said He'd try to fix everything yesterday, but since they're closed today and tomorrow, I'll hopefully get it tuesday.
My rear tire was a mess, lol.
If I ever build up a bike, I need a bombproof one.
