I got to thinking about how comfortable we are in our cars, and wondered, "What if there were a major catastrophy that caused oil prices to go through the roof, or make driving almost impossible for the average person?"
When the recent blackout hit, New Yorkers were at a loss as to how to get home. But cyclists who were used to the commute were probably fine. I had a similar experience when a giant chemical spill on the freeway caused jams everywhere, even on local streets as drivers were directed off the freeway. I got home in a normal time frame, while some complained that it held them up for hours.
Even more sobering, a disaster that disrupted car dependence for an extended period, perhaps years, could force a great number of people onto bicycles. (Fortunately, I'd be there to help them discover how it's a blessing in disguise.)
Should I stockpile bikes and bike parts?
