So if you have a high performance tire, how many miles/kilometers would they last? How would you know when they've worn down and are ready to be replaced?

Conti Ultra 2000, 1400 miles, they were cut to hell so I replaced em.

A Michelin Pro Race on the rear wheel, with less than 3000km, was down to the canvas in places. The front still looks brand new.

Per my recent maintenance records:
Michelin Pro Race, mounted on rear, lasted 1400 miles. Still had good tread, but a cut caused it to have to be replaced.
Michelin Pro Race, mounted on front, has nearly 1,600 miles with no signs of wear.
Michelin Axial Pro, mounted initially on front, then moved to rear, lasted 2,320 miles. Could have gotten more mileage out of it, but it was getting kind of thin and I was going on a bicycling vacation in the Rockies and wanted good rubber.
Michelin Axial Pro, mounted initially on rear, then moved to front (I no longer do this), lasted 2,410 miles. Replaced for same reasons as above.

I use the ultra 2000s and I get between 2000-3000 miles on a rear tire. I replace the tire when a large part of the rubber is worn off. I usually notice this after I have had a flat which was probably caused partially by the tire being nearly worn out.
