America got it SO right this year!!! First, let me be clear, I am over 50 and enjoy many genres of music, but I am left cold by the formula music that pervades much of the airwaves today.
I have not really been into American Idol in past years, but this year something drew me in.
The top 10 was exceptional based on my limited exposure to the typical AI finalists.
I was somewhat sad when David A. was declared the defacto winner by the celebrity judges, thinking that David Cook had blown him away, and trying to think of a way to express it, and not quite understanding how until last night's show.
Then seeing some of the current and past participants play, I realized what the factor was... When last year's winner. "generic girl singer" in the middle of her song shouted "come on everybody" it occurred to me... Could anyone envision a really great singer or group needing to shout "come on everybody" in a bubbly voice to get their audience involved? For example, ZZ Top? Or James Brown? Or Sting? Or Frank Sinatra? Or Hank Williams? Or Carlos Santana? Or Jim Croce?
However, I could envision David A. doing something like that... He didn't. But maybe more because of the audience that was drawn to him than David himself, that is where I envision him... His style is more of the formulaic style that is so wrong with Idol... The judges talked so much about valuing originality, and then fawned all over the plain vanilla David A. Don't get me wrong, he is a fine singer, just not in the same class as a couple of other finalists.
David Cook has the potential, with the right backing band and song choices to be an artist whose albums I will seek out, unlike previous Idol winners.
