Winter Cycling - Getting Nippy out there

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
The thermometer says 3 degrees F. I don't have my windchill chart handy but that would put today's ride into the sub-zero catagory. When it gets this cold I always think of the Jack London novel "Call of the Wild." There is a line in there where the hero spits and it turns to ice before it hits the ground. We don't get that sort of cold here, but I wonder what that would be like. I suppose in that sort of cold metal gets real brittle and I'd be busting crank arms, and chain stays, not to mention the rims, the frame... well you get the idea...
-38C was my temperature record last winter, the bike (steel beater) did just fine, although it was very stiff. I wouldn't worry about things breaking in the cold, most people would give up on riding before it got THAT cold.
