My new Surly Pacer frame came in today:thumb:This is going to be my LD/Commuter bike. I will be taking apart my current ride to use some parts out of it but some of the parts i cant re-use. I need advice on what headset to get for this frame? its uses a 1-1/8 threadless. Also what fenders can i use with this frame? according to Surly i can run 700x28 with fenders. Thanks in advance!72153

Headset: I'd vote for something with cartridge bearings: Ritchey, Cane Creek, FSA all make suitable units. The cartridge units tend to be smoother running and longer lasting, IME.

Fenders: Honjos are wonderful, last forever (if installed correctly), cost a bundle, are a pain in the butt to install, but worth every penny and minute of frustration. Berthouds are equally durable, a tad heavier (stainless steel vs aluminum), and about half the price ($40 vs. $80). Velo Orange is also bringing in some nice-looking aluminum fenders for $40-50, but that's all I know about them. All of the others are pretty much the same AFAIC: plastic, flimsy and disposable. For 28mm tires you'd want a fender at least 40mm wide. Anything wider than 45mm probably wouldn't fit your Pacer. FWIW, I've got 43mm Honjos on my brevet bike, and will never willingly use plastic fenders again.

72386here is an update on that surly pacer. Rode it in the parkinglot and its sweet:).Not finished yet. Still have to cut the fork tube. need to get a smaller clamp for the front derralieur. and a couple more minor details. it should be doing its first official LD ride next week.

well the fenders are on and tried them out on the first ride. got rained on the way back to the trailhead.

Nicel looking bike that should be a great ride. You have some serious spacers on the steerer there.

Keep an eye on the brake cable on the top tube. I have a bike setup
with brake cable on the upper L of the top tube and the darn thing
rusted just inside the housing under the seat, oem crap cables.
Swapped for stainless. It was just a fluke I picked it up as I was
getting the bike ready for a century at the time.

Nice setup. I like the way you mounted the tail lights. What do you think of the trunk bag you have on the bike? What brand is it? I see it is for sale on e-bay, but I was hoping to find more info on it.

I should mention, I own both Berthoud and Honjo fenders. While I think the Honjos look nicer, the Berthouds are MUCH easier to install and seem to be tougher (as they should be). With the Berthouds you only have to drill one hole at the seatstay bridge mounting point. With the Honjos you drill all the holes. Yes, it is worth it but it is a huge pain.
