Hello, I'm new to these forums. I love bikes and ride a Trek Antelope 820 which I bought new 17 years ago. 17 years ago we were in process to adopt our first child and I had to meet a weight requirement to adopt so I chose bicycling as my exercise since at the time I had heel spurs and plantar warts and walking wasn't so comfortable. (My feet are fine now and I walk a lot more than I bike). I lost the weight and we have adopted two children, both teenagers now (the oldest is 17).

I had quit riding for a few years because we live on a farm on a dirt/gravel road 8 miles from the nearest pavement and I couldn't ride my skinny tired 10 speed. What a wonderful invention the mountain bikes were for people who don't have pavement to ride on. Though I wish mine was more comfortable. When the roads get really rough from the big grain trucks or when the tractors work right over the field roads my teeth shake when I ride my bike and my hands go to sleep.

When we went to Korea to get our children I was amazed to see the freight bikes in use in Seoul. I had never seen such a thing. Some of them must have had hundreds of pounds of bulky stuff carried on them. Bikes are truly amazing.

As I said on the general forum, with gas prices so high, I wish I could ride my bike to town but we are 35 miles from town, 8 miles of gravel plus 27 miles of secondary paved highway with no shoulder. Not exactly a fun or safe commute.

WHOOT!! <does a little dance> I beat our official BF Master (or Mistress) of Introduction, East Hill here!!!

OK, back to business ... :)

Welcome to the forums! And yeah your "commute" has bad words in it. Gravel - ick. No Shoulder - ick. I mean I ride 'em when I'm on tour and that's the route we have to follow - but not on a daily basis (course here's me - I commute year round in busy city traffic on some awful potholed roads - btw my commuter is a mtb). There's a lot here to offer - including an all woman's forum. And lots of fun people too. Have fun here and have fun out riding your mtb - and I've done trail/downhill riding where yeah I know what you mean where you're just shaken apart - that in itself is almost a good workout! A better padded (gel) glove may help too. Have fun!

Hi 4hmom, your Antelope is a good all around rigid bike! You might want to check into a hardtail--that's a mountain bike with a suspension fork, and a fixed rear end. It might make your ride a bit smoother :) .

Anyway, where are you located in Montana? My husband's grandfather lived in Highwood long ago.

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions :) !

I always thought this was funny. We have a lot of antelope around here. Soon after I got my bike (my Trek "Antelope") when I would go out riding along the field roads, the real antelope would hide in the tall grass and jump out at me making a huffing sound. Scared me half to death at first, then I took it as a compliment from the antelope. My husband says they were laughing at me. They do seem to have a sense of humor.

Oh, I made a good guess, didn't I?

It's definitely rural!

Edit: Especially if you have pronghorns out there!
