Inspired by 10Wheels claim to an $800 bike in another thread!:D....Mine? My Canondale was $1039 back in 98. MY Lemond in 05 was $1000. Tough being a poor guy!:twitchy:
98 Cannondale- Ultegra equipped but as parts wore, I upgraded from 8 to DA 9-speed. Lots of good deals on parts! Also built my own wheels on the cheap!:thumb:

05 Tourmalet- Snapped the frame at the BB so Trek replaced the frame and fork with this snazzy 07 Chambery carbon/ aluminum frame. Tourmalet was all aluminum $1000 bike. Chambery is a $2100 carbon/aluminm bike, so I made out bigtime!:thumb: Also built these wheels too!

Newest ride.. Thanks again to Craigslist. Seller wanted $1100.00 but sold it to me for $900,00
http://www.geocities.com/e_pipins/newmerckx.jpg
Corsa Extra Merckx came with a mix of new and old. Record 10 shifters and DER... Mavic SSC Brakes & HS. Campy Eurus Wheels. Super Record Seatpost and C-Record Cranks.. Campione Del Mondo Bars and Cinelli 1-R Stem. A weird mix of old and new but it all works together very well..
I had sold one of my Motorola Merckx's to a museum, so was looking on Craigslist and found this beauty. It has no decals, but I tracked the serial # down to a 1987/88 Corsa Extra SLX Frame.. It had been painted within the last couple of years and the paint looks very good..
Early 1980's Raleigh Pursuit - five dollars.
Mid 1970's Schwinn Continental - free.

My "new girlfriend", 2008 Long Haul Trucker Complete. Paid retail for it ($985) but they threw in $75 worth of accessories, so that helped the pain :). Had the B-17 previously, so again, helped. If I had to buy everything all over, it would probably be running $1100-ish. Ouch... but the best. bike. ever.

I actually like the sora brifters more so than the two lever designs. Could be because I don't ride the drops too much.

My RANS Stratus XL was 1800$ but I probably have $300 worth of stuff on it.
Let's see $2100 * (1 Gallon of Gas/$3.80) * 15 miles/gallon = 8300 miles to break even just on gas. Dang, I better get back on the bike!

I've paid under sticker for all my bikes, mostly because I wait until they're on a "last year's model" sale.
1991 Stumpjumper Comp - $600 (Last year's model, and the LBS' "bike of the week" special)
1991 Trek 2100 - $850 (Last year's model, mis-stickered, but the LBS gave me that price anyhow because we had bought so many other bikes there.)
2008 Surly Cross-Check - $980, including fenders, mudflaps, bottle cages, swapped tires, swapped stem and 2 water bottles. The shop refunds 1/2 the price of a fitting against the price of your new bike. (Full fitting refunded if you buy a bike over $3,000) so I had a $100 price break on it.

Wow, I uh paid $30 for an old 12-speed Norco Mountaineer that I tossed some Panaracer Paselas on. Yes, the tires cost more than the bike.
I've never rode something with drops before, or good-quality components even; so I'm not even sure what I'm missing.
1300kms later though, the old tank is still holding up great and gets me around perfectly.

My 10 speed Huffy was about $70 brand new from a department store in 1996. It has about 700 miles on it so far this year, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will hold out until I can afford a road bike.

I respect a bike like yours (check out my wife's Bianchi, about 12-14,000 miles on it). But in my case, I use the bike for sport/recreation. I don't think I'd be able to train, and complete some of the rides within time limits if I were to ride a bike similar to yours.
So yeah, I'd like a bike like yours but our needs are much different. But with the price of gas, I just might get something for the commute like yours. No way am I bragging about cost in my case. My thinking is that I do ok on inexpensvie bikes considering that everyone around me rides bikes in the $3,000-$9,000 range. I'm the poor guy of the group.
Plus with over 45,000 mile under my belt, I think a bike in my price range is very suitable.

There is also my other other girlfriend, my '07 Hardrock Sport. I paid $350 for it in August of '06, got a great deal on it. I've since added a rear half-fender thing, different pedals, different saddle (Sonoma 155 - awesome cheap commuter/in-town saddle), and different tires (Nimbus Armadillos, awesome tires). It's also getting a new crankset after the stocker gave up the ghost, but even that's cheap - Shimano Alivio, $50 for crank and BB from JensonUSA.
As setup, it's pretty much the ultimate Clyde bike, I think. You'll break before it does, that much I can guarantee, and you'll have a whole lot of fun trying to break it. Not the greatest for long rides or lots of hills, but for MUP's and tooling around town, it's a blast.

Does your bike make you happy? If so, then you got a good deal, no matter what you paid for it: $30 or $3000.
As for what you're missing: Less weight and maybe smoother feel on things like shifter operation. I rode my aforementioned '91 Stumpy until this January, with many of the original components on it. It was heavy and a little crunchy at the shifters, but it worked fine for what I was doing.
Ride what makes you happy, not what makes other people happy.

I almost got caught up in the "bling" group, eyeing roadies when I was set on getting a Surly. After much debate, mostly with myself, I theorized that I ride a ton every day, and I want something that will last me for a long, long, long time. Hence, the LHT, which is pretty pricey but I figure will be one of those that I ride until it falls apart - which will be about the time I fall apart. Plus, hell, I just wanted the thing - I can admit it! :D
I will add, however, it's brutally fun to drop those on expensive rides with my big butt on my big touring bike or MTB. BRUTALLY fun. Just ask the dude riding the carbon Bianchi yesterday afternoon... :roflmao2:

When I started riding I rode a Huffy mtn bike. Within 3 months I was doing 65 mile rides. That's when I learned more about quality equipment. BB's, cranks, better tires, quickreleases etc. Equipment that allowed me to travel without carrying a bag of tools. Ratchets, wrenches, screwdrivers and a BIG seatbag. I'm talking full size tools here!:D

This is something a guy who has never been more then 40kg soaking wet, will never realize, the guy who is now 100kg that was 140kg, had a built in weight training program. It's like pulling a 40kg trailer up a hill a bunch of times, and then taking off the trailer, and doing it again, you practically set a land speed record on the last trip.....:D

Just how high can you get up on that thing, flat level surface? Wondring if you'd drop me!:innocent:
The wife and I did a 42 miler. A buddy that raced met up with us at a rest stop 1/2 way point. We headed back a bit before he did. He didn't catch us till we stopped at a waterstop (35 mile mark). He then jumped on and drafted for nearly 5 miles. We hit the last 200 yards of trail, totallyflat, no rollers, no downhill.
I wasn't expecting him to go around but he did. He stood up and took me by surprise. As he went around he shouted,"C'mon, let's sprtint to the end!". I shifted gears and took off. I pushed hard but never stood up. I cranked it up as much as I could. He gave it his all and hit 29 on the section. I flew by him at 32 mph! He was really shocked as I outweigh him by 80'ish pounds.:thumb:
I was riding an aluminum roadie, and a triple at that! OF course the bike is no longer in service, I snapped the sucker!

$500.00 for a used 2005 Giant OCR 2 ready to ride a little over a year ago. A local rider had decided to upgrade to something nicer.
Maybe one day I'll own a nicer bike, but for what it is, and what I am, that won't be anytime soon.

Oh yeah, it makes me happy as hell. Best bike I've ever owned. I'm still trying different seats to try and find one that's comfy. But my LBS(not that local, really) lets me trade random saddles out of their bin once a month for free to see if I can find one.
I have friction shifters now and they take a bit to get into another gear, but it's not really a huge problem. Maybe some indexed ones would make things a little easier for me. As for weight, there's usually 20lbs of tools strapped on the back everyday; so I'm not one of those pound-pinching kinda guys. lol

~$900 for my '07 CrossCheck complete. Upgraded with Rival free (good buddy at work has a serious upgrade habit and a serious "pay it forward" habit - worked out well for me!:))
~$400 for my '84-'85 Trek 400, bought new when I was in high school. Still like that bike, still have it, and it still rides well (or it did when I bought the XCheck - can't say I've ridden it since...) Bad me, though - she sat for almost 20 years in a shed at my parents house until I rescued her 2 years ago and brought her back to life.
Also have a '98 Rockhopper rigid that was an insurance replacement for a '94 that was stolen off my apt balcony years ago... don't remember what I paid for the first one, but it was almost certainly < $400...
$320 for my 2005 Trek SL1000, that had been ridden a total of 2.5 miles.
$80 for my Trek 950 (Craigs List).
$10 for my Schwinn Criss Cross (garage sale).
FREE: Rescued her out of my neighbor's backyard (http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=253192) where she sat for a few years unused.

My current ride is a Fuji Newest 3.0 that I paid $600 at Performance about three months ago. I bought it with my tax refund and my wife has made me a deal. If I keep on a routine riding schedule and show that I have lost a decent amount of weight then she would be o.k. with me spenging up to $2000 on my next bike.:thumb: I would like to lose around 50 lbs. (which would take me out of clyde status) by next February which is when we are setting my goal for.

In 1991, I spent $2875.00 on a Basso Lotto with delta brakes and full campy record groupo. Frame is Colombus slx and campy yipsilon wheels. It has approx. 1700 miles on it and looks showroom. I can probably get more than I paid now.
My mountain bike in 1990 was a Schwinn KOM S9 with full XT.
Even today these bikes rock!

I guess to be fair, I got about 600 miles out of it this year before my freewheel fell apart in the rain a few weeks ago. I did what every good husband would do, and stole the parts of my wife's bike and kept going.
The good new is I am stepping up to the world of road bikes. I picked up a demo model 2007 Schwinn Fastback Race from Ebay tonight. It is nothing fancy but it will be a world away from my Huffy.

Actually my brother paid $50 for it from a want ad because he wanted his 1970ish Takara 10 speed back after I got it operating. (It spent 25 years on his porch in the Redding, CA sun.)
91 TREK 820 Antelope $20. (just a back up)
$425. for my Columbian Diamondback MTB. I love this bike. It's quick and handles well. I may get some slicker tires to change on it for when I decide to stay on pavement. Either that, or just save up and get a good road bike.

Hello
Twenty years ago I was riding a raleigh when it and I got broadsided by a car doing around 70. The bike was toast the car I found out later was totaled and I was three weeks in the hosiptal and eight months in a cast and we won't even go into the roadrash lets just say the bottom of my shoe was melted from sliding on the pavement. Any way fast foward twenty years and about 90 pounds later its time to ride again. I freaked when I saw the prices of bikes now days. Three months of scraping and I found a raleigh sport for about 500 dollars. It is heavy enough to support my extra pounds and light enough to keep up a decent pace. The saddle it came with is the most comfortable one I have ever had. The only thing I have changed was putting clipless pedals on it. Yea its a triple but its really nice to have the granny gears if I need them. So far I have lost 25 pounds and am once again feeling the love of something that was missing in my life for the past 20 years
