Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Washing the inside of your helmet

OK, I know it's getting hot in some place, not in others but it will be, how do you wash the inside of your helmet? Meaning, do you use special soap or cleaner, submerge it, or some type of wipe to clean it?

I kind of noticed my Bell Sweep R is getting kind of funky and would like to clean it with out causing issues with the padding.

I ride in the rain and consider it washed.

I remove my pads, then handwash them with soap, but rinse really well so I don't sweat bubbles!:D

While the pads are off, I wipe down the inside with a saturated rag. I also set the helmet over the sink ina position so tht only the straps hang while soaking in hot water. Straps take all the salt getting purty groedy!:D

Funky Helmet Strap Syndrome

The cure is to spend some time riding like this --> :winter2:

I use my shaving brush and just stir up a good shaving lather. My Polo Blue shaving mug soap is great for my helmet. I use an old VDH shaving brush and just brush the inside and along the strap really good. I hose this off in the backyard and hang by the strap until dry. I rinse the strap especially well 'cause if it starts to irritate under my chin if it gets too grungy.

I shower right after my rides, so I just throw the helmet on the floor in the shower and then rinse it off just before I get out. I set it out on the front porch to dry.

I use those clorox disinfectant wipes, they clean really well and have yet to bleach my chin strap.

Wow no i was serious that all I do. :)

Just take it in the shower and wash it while the conditioner sets in your hair. I use some nice 2in1 shampoo conditioner on the helmet.

I do the shampoo thing too. Works great. Do it frequently, any time you've sweated up the helmet, and you won't have stink problems.

Really? Oh that would kill me. I am very sensitive to deodorants and fragrance type stuff. Heck, I take a shower before most of my rides to prevent any saddle sore type issues. Sometimes I find myself smelling a little too purty!:D

I have heard of the shower method before. My worry would be that drenching the styrofoam with water might hurt it. But then again, it was prolly was an ice-chest before a helmet!:twitchy:

There is not much chance of a Clorox wipe bleaching anything. There is actually not any bleach in them.

Those things are just laden with chemical crap, using the wipe is probably okay, just rinse it well afterwards, after all this thing is in contact with your skin.....

The straps on my new helmet have turned from black to white. Now I just scrape the salt over my food.

kitchen sink, hot water, dish sprayer, back on shelf to dry. Either that or take it in the shower with me.

I removed the pads in mine and they crumbled in my hands. I immediately purchased a SweatGutr and that thing has performed wonderfully!

Cool, thanks for the idea's. It raining up here and will probably be getting wet tomorrow on my ride so maybe I will bring some soap with me and just give it a wash and rinse on the ride. :D

Hmmmm... maybe I should put one of those hotel bar soaps inside the helmet and it will just self clean as I ride. LOL. I would just have an issue with soap in my eyes. This is not a good idea is it?

Really though. Now, that it is the mid-high 90s I really do need to start washing that thing.

Another vote for jumping into the shower with it after a ride. Don't even use soap - the hot water itself seems to do a good enough job if you do it after every ride.
