There is a possibility I will have to visit Honolulu on business in February. I am not sure where I will be staying, but there is a hotel a block or two from the beach downtown that I stayed at last time, think it was called the Ala Moana, but it was 12 or more years ago.

Any residents know where I could rent a road bike that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

I don't really have an answer to your question; but my girlfriend was there last spring and she rented a bike for a week. She said that she went to two shops and both of them rented bikes, but one had much nicer equipment. I don't think you'll have too much trouble finding something decent to rent there.

Last time I was in Honolulu I saw cyclists all over the place..Riding once you get out of town was pretty good.Seems there was sufficient bike lanes.
My problems with rentals...I am picky about what kind of bike i ride.Just got back from Moorea. Awesome island.
Emailed the bike rental shops.I had the promise of a decent mountain bike at Europacar. Try to find it.! And I complained of three speeds- most were one speed. Real crap.. Had I taken my bike( free !) on Air Tahiti Nui, think I would have had one of the better bikes on the whole island. 21 speed hybrid..(Did see the ocassional real cyclist early in the AM, with real bikes doing their AM work out.) Probably French....ON vacation.
The island only has two hills and very little traffic. TO my shame, I did not ride the whole island as my goal had been...Would have been a beautiful ride. A respectably sized island and only 9,000 people. Light traffic...What a loss to my bike log.
ONly available, a one speed, not accessories. No water bottle and it was hot.Summer there.Arrangement was it fails they come and pick you up. Could not figure how to use the phone!
At least I got in some scuba time and that was incredible.

a friend of mine was there a few months ago, he said that he rented a bike for 24 hours. he picked it up in the afternoon and got in a ride and also in the morning before returning it. You should bring your own pedals and shoes as well as helment.
