OP- it's the cleats, not the shoe.

i was just worried the cleat of the shoes (knobby crap) would get in the way.

I had to cut a little of the knobs off of my older Specialized mountain shoes so that I could clip in better on my Time Atacs.
Newer shoes might be a little different.
