I want to build a cyclocross wheel with an old XTR hub. Does anyone know if it is possible to change the spacing on the hub so that it will fit into a frame with 130mm spacing? Thanks.

How about spreading the dropouts so the XTR hub will fit? It has been done, quite often.

If it is a steel or Ti frame it should fit no problem. I'm running a 135 hub in a frame built as a 130 no problem. Just spread the dropouts with your hands as you put the wheel in. Don't suggest you do this with an Alu or CF frame.

I've thought about that. The thing is that I don't have the frame yet, nor do I know when I will get it or what it will be. I am looking for a winter project. I never really ride my mountain bike anymore and I plan on parting most of it out to a cyclocross frame when one comes along. I need to learn how to build wheels and this just seems like a good place to start.

With the xtr hub you can remove the spacer from the non-drive side and replace it with one five mm shorter(Just leave the plastic cone off). Then redish the wheel.
We did this for a guy that did not want to spread his frame.

Thanks Rev. I thought something like that might work, but I get myself in over my head if I just rush in. I Appreciate the help.

You need a shorter axle as well.

Not necessarily. I re-spaced a 130mm rear hub down to 126mm and I didn't have to change the axle. It depends on the thickness of the rear dropouts.

Just hacksaw the axle down!
