Mountain Biking - are hardtail free-ride bikes good for trails?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
im new to mountain bikes (i have been riding road bikes for the past 3 years).
so far i have been looking at bikes like the giant stp zero and some norco hardtails.
are hardtail bikes like these good for trails? i see these bikes ridden ridden on the street or being dirt jumped a lot. i have a lot of bmx friends so it will get some use that way but i would also like to trail ride.
thanks for the help and sorry for the ignorance =)

Yes. They will work on trails but they are slack and heavy and probably don't climb great compared to your roadie.
I LOVE my 07 STP 2.
I have a Manik with a Pike that is a lot of fun as a trail bike.

Never is there any bike you don't have?:D
I only have four bikes that I ride plus another three in the garage so I would guess there may be one or two models I don't have.

They will work but would not be anyones choice frame, if you are looking for XC riding (this can depend on the trails around your house, i wanted to DH but had no choice due to trails and am now a XC) then i would go with a XC hardtail frame but if you're looking for "hardtail DHing" than it will do.
