Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - New riding Partner

Well, I have a new riding partner.....:D

My wonderful wife :love: is now the proud owner of a Raleigh Big Horn (ladies frame MTB), it's an experienced bike, but we managed to get it home (on a street car and subway no less), and it's now locked up in the garage. Swapped the knobby tires for a pair of semi slicks (Kenda Kwest - 26 x 1.5), I need to add a bell (which is a legal requirement here in Ontario), and the front brake needs adjusting. No pictures as of yet, as it was too late when we got home. She hasn't ridden in a while, so she will need to get used to it. I rode it a bit, and it seems to be fairly quick for a steel framed mountain bike. I have never had grip shifters, but her bike has them, and they seem okay, and shift nicely. The previous owner had put a set of bullhorn bar ends on it, not sure whether they will get used or not, I may just try those for myself, if she doesn't want them. Still need to adjust the fit as well, then it's just getting in those pedal strokes.......

If you really want her to ride with you, then quick, ladies saddle and good shorts! If she's a twig, Most PI models should work well. If she's an Athena with some hiney, maybe Terry shorts. My wife loves them. Tried PI's, too thin an not much padding. Terry shorts are thick material and nice padded chamois. Made for women by a woman!. She hopped right on the bike and did 84 miles no issues at all. Think they were about $80 but well well worth it.

She uses a Specialized lady's Dolce gel by Specialized. $50 and well worth it. I sat on it the other day, I just might pick one up for me!:D

As for the bar ends, I didn't get much chance to try them, when I rode around on it a little, but if they work for her well, I may just get myself a set, now that I see how they attach. Shorts will need to wait a bit, as will any saddle upgrades, heck I ride the stock saddle on mine just fine, but I have shorts.

Cool! Well atleast try to get her a $30 pair of shorts, HUGE difference in comfort. Riding with seams is murder. Matter of fact, I think it should be used as method in retrieving info from international spies!:roflmao2:

I don't know about spies, but I think every idiot who runs a bicycle off the road or parks in a bike lane, should be forced to ride an old one speed gas pipe bicycle 40 miles on the hottest day of the year, wearing blue jeans and a leather jacket, directly behind an old diesel highway bus with bad rings and a blown clutch so it only runs in low gear, at about 4000 RPM, going UP hill, directly into a 40MPH headwind, while it's raining, with no helmet.

See if they do THAT again......

Yay. My wife bought a bike about a year ago. We went on a few rides and then she got frustrated. It has sat for many months.

Yes, thanks to the forum here, I sent for aerotech capri pants.

It's a nightmare here in the UK trying to get any women's cycling clothes in larger sizes. Our British "reserve" dictates we big women shouldn't even try it seems! :mad: (rant)

Back to the Aerotech capris - they are good quality and comfy and, even with the shipping cost, I thought they were pretty good value. Not shorts but I suppose the quality will be much the same.

Having your "other half" by your side is great :love: isn't it?

An Update

After her first ride, just under 4km, she said a few things hurt, but that is to be expected :D
