View Full Version : Rusty
I noticed a slight bit of corrosion (rust) on my chain. I have had the bike for about 3 months and rode in the rain twice. I have about 150 miles on it. Is this normal? I wipe my bike down every time I ride and I just had it's first adjustment after the break in about 2 weeks ago. Help, please.

surface rust.....brush it off with a wire brush and then lube your chain, its happend alot to me, especially after mud.
I never dry of my chain or anything. There is never any rust on it. I dont know if cleaning it after major mud rides and then lubing it is preventing rust.

It is probably very or moderately humid where you are right? That may cause your chain to rust...What kind of lube do you use? Maybe something that dries on like Ice Wax would be better?

I haven't used any since it is so new, I just took it to the bike shop for its first adjustment recently. I guess I should buy something, any other suggestions/brands? I will look for Ice Wax if that is the one you recommend.

I prefer White Lightning or Finish Line's Krytech. Both are wax based lubes and do well for the conditions I ride. I've used Pedro's Ice Wax, and it works well, it just goes on really, really thick and I feel I'm wasting a lot.

If you live in a dry area go for the wax, if you live in a wet area, take more waterresistant lube, like Finish line Cross Country.
Don`t mind for the rust, if you lube the chain regularly it will disapear.
Good luck,
rust on a new bike?
the rust on the chain may be coming from the pins.
its a new bike and if you got it from a local bike shop
take it back ask them to fix it.
the best fix is to remove the chain then clean and lube.
use a lube that is best for the area you are in..
I like white ligthing.
if you can remove the clean and lube the best you can
just make sure that the chain can move freely
dont leave it outdoors.

You haven't been using lube? Ah ha!! Then all you need is to ride down to your LBS and get some and then poof!! The rust should dissapear. I've heard good things about White Lightening and Ice Wax, either will do fine. Ask your bike shop dude what he reccomends since he is more familiar with the climate.
Thanks, Guys for all the suggestions. I will be going to the LBS tomorrow. THANKS!!!! Gotta love the Bike Forums!!!:D
