We cyclists know about nighttime visibility, right? Some of us are lit up like Christmas trees. I'm not sure I can ever have too many lights.

But pedestrians don't always get this. They go j-walking across 5-lane roads in complete darkness. But that's not all.

Years ago, I was talking with my math teacher about the benefits of walking. She decided to take it up, but it was too hot during the day. I warned her about my experiences with nighttime walking, how cars don't expect you to be there.

I later learned that she had been killed one night by a car while out walking. How tragic!!

When I walk or jog after dark, I carry a CatEye halogen headlamp and I put a red LED blinkie on my backpack or over my belt loop. I also plan to wear white, at least on top.

Excellent point! My children and I wear those orange jogger vests with the reflective stipe for our pre-dawn walk/run time. I've instructed them to always assume the driver is night-blind (just walked out of their house) and is looking for their coffe cup just as they approach. In other words, always assume the driver can't see you unless there is direct evidence to the contrary.
