Hey everyone, I have an old Centurion CompTA with vertical droupouts and I wanted to convert it to a singlespeed, however the wheel I have is a quick release (with a casette). .

Is there a way I can use this same wheel (with the skewers) and NOT have to use a chain tensioner? Please say yes.

You should probably move this to SS/FG.

Anyway, depending on the gearing you use you should be able to get the chain to fit well without the chain tensioner. You may need to use a half link. For SS, the chain does not have to be as tight as for FG, but you should still not have too much slack.

You would have to build up new wheels with this but....

I have a SS with vertical dropouts and no chain tensioner but was lucky enough to find that magic gear. Sounds like a chain tensioner is the way to go. You could file the dropouts if it's not too nice of a frame.

I have a friend who rides one that uses an old rear derailleur as a chain tensioner. It doesn't have as clean a look, but it is damn smart, and he was able to make it out of what he had.

SS, good question. he has kids, so he has to make thing economical. crazy dude, 24 hour racer so he has to train early season on cty roads and such. I see him riding all the time, he has road drop bar mtb, ape hanger road bike, and all the standard bikes too.
I've wanted to ride with him more, but he doesn't like to wait on me!
