Access to the For Sale Forum is for premium subscribers (Red Star Members). You can sign up here:

$25 one time fee for a 30 year subscription. :D
thats some bs that you force you users to pay if the want to be able to create a new thread.

are you guys saying the bandwidth used in the sale section is going to amount to $30 per person? even if you add hosting costs, thats crazy talk. on one hand you have these forums, like hey come here and talk about bikes for free and get help blah blah, but wait, you must be a super elite special member with a gold star if you want to post in one particular place only. the section would probably get a ton more use (which is a good thing, the last time i checked) if it was open to everyone. what you should do, is make the forums completely open, and put a little donation thing up in the corner. if people use it and see it's worth, they'll donate. that's how it's been in every private community i've been a member of.

The $30 is not to cover the cost of the extra bandwidth. To post in the For Sale forum is a benefit of being a paid member, along with having no ads on the forum. I have no problem with this. And I am kind of glad it is like this. I don't mind people selling their stuff here, but I wouldn't like a bunch of people coming here just to sell their goods. I would hope that a paying member would also post in other areas.
If the For Sale was free, it could easily become another Craigslist, instead of an area where the community members can sell their bikes.

How many have you belonged to? And why does it matter? Having been a member, run, administered (used to be sysop back in the early days) and created many bbs's and forums over the last 20 years there is no tried and true model. Having been here since near the beginning, this model works well for this site. It likely doesn't work well for others.
The site is here to provide information, if you want to use it like a mini-ebay, pony up the small amount of cash. It goes towards keeping the site running and is an exclusive feature for paying members (gives people incentive to pay)
If you don't like it, there is ebay or craiglist.

I'll ask Brian if he spotted it yet.

Red stars have to be added by hand (ie, it's not an automated process). East Hill has added a note for the admins to add it for you asap. Sorry for the delay.

One of the reasons why we restrict posting for sale ads to red star members is because we'd like to reduce the chance someone registers here for the sole purpose of selling items. That's not what we're here for. Also, it reduces the possibility that the sale will go bad. We take no responsibility for people getting ripped off, but if we limit who can post items for sale to members who might have more at stake in this online community, it reduces the chances of fraud.
It's not a 100% assurance, but we do believe it helps.
Okay, I probably missed it somewhere, but I have an item to sell but apparently don't have the authorization to post in "For Sale." What do I need to do?
You need to be a paid member and then you can post in the For Sale forum. Follow this link: http://www.bikeforums.net/payments.php
I was going to try and sell a saddle, but it says I don't have permission.

You need to be a paying member (with a red star). $25 for a virtual lifetime (or 30 years, whichever comes first!).

Hello,
I'd like to start a new thread in the for sale section and am unable to do so. Do I lack the necessary permission? How do I change this?
Thanks

To clarify: You need to be a premium member to post a thread in the Marketplace. There is a subscription fee of $25 for a 30 year subscription. Let me or one of the other Admins know you've done so by PMing a paste of your pay pal transaction receipt to us. We don't need or want any account numbers. We'll place your red star for you.
