Don't go to walmart.
Stay away from Wall Mart.
Honestly, if it's a first "real" mountain bike, I wouldn't go full suspension (front and back shocks) because you're not going to get anything decent unless your willing to spend 1,000+
You can get a decent new Hardtail (front shocks only) for anywhere from around 350 and up.
price range, and the biked intended use is a must for us to help you.

Good bike for a 16 year old? Well you're 16 and I'm guessing you don't have a ton of cash to have 2 or 3 bikes. You need one that will do a lot of things. I guessing you'll need it to be tough, folks in you age group tend to be a little more aggro. Here are couple of ideas for ya. If your looking to race XC.....nevermind.

Specialized Stumpy or Epic S-Works. May as well get the best since you'll end up buying a bike then ebaying it in 6 months, buying another bike, then ebaying in 6 months, eventually buying the Epic. Oh wait, that's me.
Goto a bike shop and see if they have a last years model on sale. Goto more than one shop.

It's going to be difficult to find a quality full suspension under $1000. You can get some GREAT hard tails well under $1000 though. Really depends on what your riding style will be.
Problem with Ebay, etc is sizing. A bike shop will be a better judge on what size you should get.
