Living Car Free - What's Your Walk Score?

Interesting, but do they think we're kind of lazy? I got 37, which is in the category "not walkable". This despite the fact that it found groceries less the 0.25 miles away, and most other stuff less than 1/2 mile.

My new place: 31

Bike score for my old place: 30, based on likelihood of being mowed down by an SUV full of highschoolers.
Bike score for my new place: 90, based on lower traffic roads and everything except for work being within 5 miles ride.

(bike score is an arbitrary personal rating based on no mathematical principles at all.)

Current place in chicago 99/100
Where I grew up in Texas: 22/100

I got a 35... but it lists a grocery store that's been closed down for some time. So I imagine it's effectively less than 35:(

zero here, and I believe it, unfortunately. Living in the woods is a blessing and a curse.

Time to resurrect an old thread...

My wife and I moved into a new neighborhood. We live in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Denver, right next to Cheeseman Park (1/2 block).

Walkability score: 91

It really is an awesome neighborhood! :)

I came up with a walk score of 37. Kansas City average was 48.

I get a 68 out of 100, which I suppose isn't bad, but I think it's a bit higher. I have an optometrist, dry cleaners, etc all with in walking distance. The only thing I'm really missing is a Physician - I have to hop on one of the two buses that go right by my door to go down to the University of Iowa hospital.

Oh, and I lack a nearby LBS. We have a Scheels Allsports with a bike service department in the mall 3/4 mi away, but I don't trust them with my bike. I do most of my own stuff anyway, and if I need to head to an LBS for something I can't do, it's only 5-6 miles and the buses will drop me off 1/2 mile from two or three of them. But I guess that's not necessarily a requirement to be "walkable".

It would be kind of nice if they included other services though, such as doctors and optometrist, etc.

Up from a 3 to a 6. Three of the businesses they have listed are closed down, and the school they have listed is the Boys & Girls club run out of the health clinic.

Some of those places I can walk too that are close have I-44 (route 66) a major interstate in the way. If I can somehow figure how to cross that on foot I'm all good.

The house I currently own has a score of 12. I am in the process of moving and the new place has a score of 0.

What is funny is that the old place is distant from every where I need to go. The new place puts what I want to do within easy bicycle distance.

They obviously don't take into consideration the idiot teen drivers on my road....at least once a week some Mario Andretti wannabe thinks his car/truck will defy the laws of physics and not go off the road when they try to drive around that curve at 90mph.....at least 1 time per week. Once, had a kid jump the curve in front of my house, slide all the way across my yard, and missed the neighbors car in his driverway by inches.....and that cars front axel was still in the street where he hit the curb. 29...yeah, right.

The house I'm about to sell has a walkscore of 27, which sounds about right - there's a school, a library, a couple of pubs, an expensive convenience store, a doctor, and nothing else for 5 miles to the next town. I'm in the process of buying a flat in the city centre, which has a walkscore of 80 - not as high as I think it should be.

Dunno if that score is accurate or not... the database is a lot more complete/accurate in larger cities... and even there it's been shown to be pretty inaccurate at times.

Most of the places I have lived scored between 75 and 100. I have to admit that the place that scored 100 rocked. I could have stayed in a two block radius and never lacked for anything except exercise. Our current home scores a 49. It's partly surrounded by a large park, which is actually great for recreational purposes. But it is still very easy to be car free due to the very convenient bus stops and bike path. It also helps that work scores a 98 so I can just do errands after work before heading home. Easy peasy.

Hah! I've moved since I did this last, so now my score is 63. That's still only "Somewhat walkable". :rolleyes:

I got a 12 because I live in a suberb that is 3.5 miles from downtown. which takes all bout ~15 minutes to bike to. MUP included.

66/100, but that's counting Hardee's as a restaurant, the park district office as a park, the baggy gangsta wear central as a clothing store, and Save-A-Lot as a grocery store. I do walk, but mostly just to explore rather than for transportation.

95 out of 100 Walkers' Paradise! I live in the East Town part of downtown Milwaukee, WI and I would of assumed it would score very high!

My new house is 69, the old one was 63. The walking is much more pleasant where I live now--pretty neighborhoods, the river, artsy-fartsy business district.

12 where I live now, 46 where I am moving, and everything seems really really close, I can't imagine 90+.

It says 29, 39 less than my age. I've been car free for 21 years. We don't have Modo's teenagers, we have rich tourists with giant SUV's who think 1.5 lane roads are freeways and phone booths. The locals are much better, they will pick up a stranger walking with groceries in the winter on those few days the roads are not bikeable and say "You're the dood with the bike".

Probably my score is really 20 since I don't like their choice of grocery, bars etc. :)

They still haven't fixed the damn thing. Within 2 miles of my house I have a bar, a coffee shop, 2 sort of restaurants, a grocery store, a medical clinic, a couple of stop and robs and my bank...and I live on 40 acres.:thumb: They have all of the above businesses listed, but in the wrong locations.

I am currently in Iowa working and the walk score here is 58...which is insane considering I can see just about everything I need from my hotel window AND they have sidewalks, walk signals and reasonably courteous drivers.
