I'm gonna be building up a 29er MTB in the fall. I want to use disc's and I am looking into using the Shimano Alfine (I think the only difference between it and the Nexus is disc compatibility). Does anyone have any experience with this (or the Nexus) off road? Is it worth it? I will more then likely be going with a EBB cause of the disc's.

I don't want to steer you away from the Alfine, but give you one more option. Look at Sturmey Archer hubs. They are known to be pretty tough. The issue with the Alfine is that it's a dedicated road/commuter hub. I fear that a couple hundred miles of rough trail could eat it for lunch. The downfall with the Sturmey is that the lowest ratio is 1:1, I believe. No under-drive.
