Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - The FIRST Hipsters circa 1880

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I found these guys today. They've got almost everything:
1.) Steel frame
2.) Brooks type leather saddle
3.) Fixed gear
4.) Pseudo moustache/pseudo riser bars
5.) Leather belts from which to stick their kryptonite minis
6.) No brakes (added courtesy of 04jtb below)
So should we expect the bowties and the hats any day now to start popping up on messengers?

Great catch! Can't believe I missed the obvious! I'll add your's to the list above (with due credit, of course).

They also have no penis, because they're both female. I know this because I asked them. And their saddles aren't leather, they're wood.

So how many miles does it take until you break in a wood saddle? ... ouch...

They're from Soviet Russia, where it is said, "saddles break you!"
No foot retention.
White tires.

Maybe someone could double-check my counting - but those wheels appear to be 28 hole. Amazing. I thought wheels had 40 spokes back then.

There's a great compilation thread of old photos on this forum. Use the search function and add this one to the thread. I bet a lot of the newer members would get a kick out of seeing all those great old photos.

I think the high-wheelers from the previous generation would fit your definition just about as well. Not to mention riding more dangerously.

these "high wheelers" are actually called penny farlings and theyre like a big unicycle since theyre not geared up at all. I wouldnt consider them too dangerous tho

They were for those who wore skirts. The safety bike allowed women to commute easily.

Also I hope people don't start wearing their pants that high. I'm enjoying the low-rise.

Tires were made of elephant intestine back in those days. 120 TPI (total pachyderms involved)
