I'm thinking about installing a Blackspire Stinger on my 1x9 setup. The only reason is b/c the bottom section of chain slaps against my inner guide ring once-in-a-while and makes a "boxing bell ringing" noise. My chain stays on fine right now...it's just noisy now and then.

Is the pulley on a chainguide annoying and loud when you pedal?
Should I just throw all this crap out and get a full-on guide? (kinda pricey)
Should I quit pi$sin' and moaning and just invision myself getting TKO'd when the boxer bell rings, hahaha.

Thx

No, especially if they are ceramic pulleys.

Jenson will price match this

Buck up, Ed! Get the Stinger . . . or a Montara Heim 3-Guide (pre-e.thirteen buyout). Sure it'll growl at you some; but you will enjoy the payoff.

Shucks I ran a DCD Mr. Crud for a few years on at least a couple different bikes and THAT was a noisy one (no bearings, just fix rub 'roller') but I got over it. Waaa-waaa.

It's wierd...the reason I'm buying the Stinger is to get rid of the Clank noise from the chain smacking the Blackguard. Why am I worried about pulley noise?

Besides...it looks cool

I get it - - Growl-growl is better than ching-ching. Envy inner ring wouldn't sound tinny tho' ;)

FWIW the Heim 3-guide's backing plate is stainless, thus lower profile, if you have chainline concerns. You don't have ISCG tabs on that frame, correct?

Right...I'd need a BB mount setup.

OK, next question: is weight an issue? Oh, wait, aesthetics is, huh? 'Cause I have my real sweet Heim copy that I made out of stainless, three hand-swaged flared 'speed-holes' in and sporting a custom, cut-down skateboard wheel. Best part is, it's just gathering dust in my bike parts cabinet. It could be yours to try for nothing.

Sounds a little Ghetto:lol:

I think I'll try riding a few more "rough" trails and prob. pull the trigger on the stinger. Thanks for the offer though. I quite skateboarding when I was 23:roflmao2:

I haven't been on one hardly since college - - right before urethane wheels made skateboarding take off again for good (they used to have steel-wheeled and, a bit later, rink-skate trucks ) I needed a guide wheel and got a cast-off from a nice guy at the local skate shop.

Ya, get the Stinger; I'll get over the hurt of my ghetto-guide being spurned.

Yeah, Smashy, I fixed it: "dust." there. Sometimes I reread before I hit 'submit' and sometimes I don't. :D

Yo D, can you posts me up some good photos of that ghetto guide of yours, if it's not too much trouble?

Note the outward taper. This keeps it from dropping down a ring when backpedalling:

Backside. Note rolled edges and flared holes for extra rigidity:

1 3/8" hole saw makes just the right size hole for a standard BB cup:

Left an outer lip on the skate wheel to ride outboard of the outer chainring or bash guard:

I "turned" the wheel on a bolt chucked into a drill press and used the end of a flat file for the 'chisel.' Slow but sure.
