Bicycle Mechanics - Was this built correctly? (with pics)

just bought my first (decent) bike, GT Avalanche.

They built it over the weekend and I just picked it up a few hours ago. To me, it looks like there is a cap of some sort missing. I can see the grease from the bearing. I can imagine how much dirt and crap could collect in there over time. None of the other bikes we have look like this....

what you have is a seal BB and what you see is normal . even the grease is . if you haven't rode the bike yet now the time to wipe it away. if it dirty and you wipe it you will push the dirt into the bearing .

There is no cap missing either. Most recent square taper and hollow axle (Octalink and ISIS) bottom brackets use 8mm Allen bolts to retain the crank arms. What you are seeing is the 8 mm recess and these aren't capped.

phew thats a reflief. it just seemed odd to me that even a sealed bearing would be exposed like that, seems like a nice place for dirt and other junk to collect

It's not the bearing that's exposed. What you see is either grease from putting in the non-drive-side cup, or grease from greasing the interface between that cup and the cartridge (if the mechanic's a stickler).

In other words, it's not essential grease, nor do you see bearings. Wipe and ride.

To me it looks like the left crank arm is awfully far away from the bottom bracket. Is it fully seated?

Love the frame finish. No love so much the aluminum brazing <yuck>.

Aluminum is welded, not brazed. It looks pretty good.

Yeah, that's a nice weld.

And I like the finish too.
