Tandem Cycling - Gloves--What are YOU wearing?

I've just worn out my second pair of Nashbar gloves. I like them because they don't have velcro and they do have some gel padding where it seems to be useful. However, I'm tired of wearing them out. So what are you wearing? Have a "can't live without them" favorite pair?

Pearl Izumi something racer. Fairly cheap, but strangely ideal, I don't think I have ever had a nicer set of gloves. I know what you mean about velcro, but these have it done right.

None for me... Yeah, I know. They've saved my palms in the past during a few single bike crashes 'back in the day' but I just prefer to ride without nowadays.

Debbie, on the other hand, wears whatever I find on sale, but they tend to be Pearl's pittards or knock-offs by Performance and others, e.g., two pair of really great looking Corona-branded gloves from Kucharik that we picked up a the Tandems East Expo.

Got half dozen pair of gloves each for stoker and pilot. No real favorites, not hung up on brand names. Picked up a couple pair of plain black fingerless motorcycle/cycling gloves (paid $5 for the 2 pair) at a swapmeet in Quartzsite, AZ years ago and we can't seem to wear 'em out (made in China); ditto a pair of old Trek gloves. A few pair looked great but did not last long.
If they fit and feel good, we're happy!

Roeckle. good padding in the palms. Lasted over two years with one long tour included. would buy again. Tuffs would be next choice.

Over the past few years I have weened myself off of wearing gloves during the summer months. Now I only wear gloves in the winter and when its raining. Saves a bunch of money, since I was going through about 2 to 3 pairs of PI Gel-Lites each summer (that's ~$60 a year I am no longer spending).

I find no difference in comfort when using a good Gel handlebar tape.

My wife and I both have been using the Pearl Izumi Pittards leather since 2004. The Pittards leather really is much more durable. It can be washed so that it doesn't get smelly and gross (but it stays flexible). On our first pairs, the fabric would tear loose from the seam where it joined the leather near the wrist but the leather and padding was still fine. My current pair has several thousand miles on them and they have not torn there so I think they have improved that seam or fabric.

I could imagine riding without gloves at this point but I would lose one of my identifying traits of having white hands with tanned arms during the summer.:)

I have an old Spenco jell padded handle bar covering. Last forever when covered with a thick padded tape. No need for padded gloves with that much padding on the bars. My stoker, who doesn't need to grip the bars so tightly, wears gloves also.

I'm not quite ready for naked hands, so I picked up a new pair of PI. Thanks for all the info.

Pearl Izumi Gel Lite seem to have just the right amount of padding in the right places.

Funnily enough the only thing that I have ever hurt whilst riding was my hands when I wiped out bare handed. I always wear gloves and I fell in love with the Specialized ones with the large bump on the palm (opposite the thumb)
I wiped out on my Honda 500 years ago whilst glove free:cry: and had a tar implant for about a month.

We have a Pearl Izumi factory store in town, so I wear lots of PI stuff cause it's cheap. I've been wearing PI leather gloves since they first came out in the 80's....

These ones. they're only like 5$ a pair at MegaloMart. I have the flourescent green ones.

No need for padded gloves with that much padding on the bars.

No padding other than the single layer of Cinelli cork tape... Only three problems that I know of with regard to going with 'nekkid' hands:

1. If you crash you really make a mess out of the heels of your hands
2. When it's really hot the cork tape can become saturated with sweat and the combination of sweaty hands on sweat-soaked cork tape makes for less than a perfect grip on those long hot climbs that generate all that sweat.
3. If it rains and you haven't washed the sweat out of your cork tape, all of that sweat seems come back with a vengence.

+1 on the PI's- but just a point. I changed from MTB to road and my hands had pain. Local LBS did not have much variety on gloves so went to the Local Tri-Athlon shop and they had about 40 different types of Gloves. Analysed where the hand pain was coming in on the bike and tried most of the shops stock till I found a pair that were comfortable for me on drop bars. Gloves do have an effect on comfort- with the padding in various places.

I love my Specialized BG women's gloves, in shades of blue and sun-fade, from spring '07. Comfy, light, no pain.

I have two pairs of PI Gel-lite gloves. One pair ripped at the thumb junction after a couple of months, so I returned them for replacement. They're black, so they go with everything. ;) I've had some pain and finger numbness while wearing them, but that might be because I was in my drops for nearly 2 hours, racing.

I've only worn out 1 pair of gloves in 3 years. I machine wash, gentle, cold, hang to dry. Maybe that's why?

I don't have a favorite brand but the only gloves i will use are the old style crochet type. I am just old and stubborn. Sometimes they are hard to find locally. When i do find some i like i usually buy 3 or 4 pair. One great benefit is you get this poka-dot tanning effect across the back of your hands :** I hit with the ladys!:thumb:

I also have the Pearl Izumis. Two minus points: The thumb seam rubs where I hold campy ergo levers on the hoods after 50 miles. Point number 2 the rubber Pearl Izumi logo on the index finger is where the soft sweat absorbing bit should be. I always scratch my face with it before I remember. Hopefully it will fall off in the wash before long.

My current fave gloves are the Specialized Pro non-gel gloves. I was sceptical at first as the palms look odd as have a mesh palm with only a few bits of padding and no velcro fastening at the wrist. However they are dead comfy and after 6 months still tight enough not rub but not too tight. Only minor drawback is that they take 30 seconds longer to take off.
