Fifty Plus (50+) - 50+'ers, Important Advice Needed

When one has reached the point in life where he has....errr......outgrown his hair, how does one prevent forming an interesting pattern of sunburn blotches on one's head from the vent openings in one's helmet?

After two days of riding in bright sunshine, don't ask why I really, really need the answer.

Sunscreen?

Bandana?

wear a cycling cap or bandanna on head under your helmet. headsweats also sells a hot weather cap esp. for this purpose.

A bandanna works for me. Headsweats and various brands of Coolmax skull caps are good, too. I never wear sunscreen above my eyes. I never want to repeat that painful experience.

Hadn't thought of that. For two reasons, I don't sweat much and I still have all (well, at least 90% of it - no bald spots as yet) of my hair. I can wear sunscreen on my forehead without having any problems.

I just put sunscreen up there. I haven't gotten burned yet. If you do this, don't put any too close to your forehead though, because as you ride, some of it is bound to migrate down into your eyes. You may have to reapply on a very long ride.

I still have enough hair (barely) to have never encountered this problem. However I do like the Headsweats products, especially the ones that tie in the back. They keep the sweat out of my eyes and make me look like a pirate. Yar!

I wear bandana that double as a sweatband. Does the job for me.

And, when you take off your helmet you look like a pirate, which is alway sa good thing, isn't it?

Helmet hole tan like glove hole tan and strange tan lines about mid thigh are just badges of honor for cyclists. It sounds like the skull cap would be better than extreme burning however. I still have a full head of (wait for it..................white) hair but this time of year I cut it so short that I still can burn on the top of my head.

I always ride with a bandana/headsweat.

The evil Wally Mart has a nice head sweat style, although made of cotton, thing for under your helmet for the grand total of $1.44 in the mens underware dept. Don't ask who decided to put them there?

Cycling cap for me and for a lot of reasons. Still have enough fluff on the noggin to stop sunburn- but I have a problem in summer with sweat running down the face and this stops it- In winter the air flow through the vents gives me a cold head- and the hat stops it. At rest stops-I want a shield from the Sun in the eyes and this stops it.

And on top of that- It stop the other riders from remarking about sun blindness at stops from the Bare scalp that is beginning to appear.

So, Stapfam, does the cycling cap fit under your helmet? I have a pretty big head, 24 inches/61 cm, but I just checked my helmet and there is still a little adjustment left.

How about a snood for my ponytail? (I'm not very good at braiding.)

I wear a sweat band because otherwise the sweat drips in my eyes and stings. When I do longer rides in the summer I take two - one to wear and one to dry on my handlebar or such.

I don't like to wear a bandana or cap that completely covers my head because I like the feeling of air blowing over my scalp. I have 3 helmets with different air vent patterns to minimize the tan lines.

+1 on the headsweats, known affectionately by the younger set as a "do-rag," also worn by major athletes and rappers. I only wear a bandanna when I can't find my headsweat band. Bandannas made of cotton absorb the sweat and don't let go.

My only complaint with coolmax skull caps is that I often get an Alfalfa effect when I take it off. Oops! Sorry, that wouldn't be a issue with the OP's situation.

True, but I often rinse them out at rest stops. The water evaporates and cools my head, at least until the new sweat takes over.

Under the helmet. Only time I rode without a helmet that I can remember was up Ventoux. At 8 miles I put a bandana on to stop the sweat and it worked- but at 16 miles I was going so slow I took the helmet off. Pics of me with a bandana on persuaded me to get the cap and it is only cotton and seems to work well. And with the helmet on- Peak to the back.

I know, your not asking for your self, but you have a close friend with this problem, right. ; )
Try turning your helmet 1/8 every hour, that way the tan will even itself out on an 8 hour ride, or if you know your only going for a 1 hour ride turn it every 15 minutes. I don't see what's so hard about this.
