I have two questions:

1. Why is Hawaii in this subforum?? It makes no sense.

2. How are other people in Hawaii feeling about the current biking situation in Honolulu? I find it nice cause it's warm out all the time but also theres some mean drivers out there who get nastly road rage at me while I'm riding and it kinda freaks me out.

Because not enough people are complaining loudly enough to change it.

As for the other, thankfully I don't live on o'ahu, the sprawlburb island.

Critical Mass this Friday; come out and meet your fellow O'ahu cyclists behind the Capitol building.

Hello ryuuchiba - welcome to Bikeforums.

I guess there isn't a Hawaii subforum because there really aren't enough Hawaii people in here to justify it.

The current biking situation in Hawaii isn't too bad. Road rage happens, and as long as you ride enough, it's practically inevitable. Here are a couple of ways to deal with it:

1. Pick your routes carefully. I try to stay away from certain places, like Beretania, certain sections of King St. and Ala Moana Blvd. Both Beretania and Ala Moana Blvd. are too narrow and very busy. King St. is wide, but there is so much activity (cars pulling into and out of stalls and driveways), I generally try to avoid it.

2. Ride predictably - ride in the direction of vehicular traffic, obey the rules of the road, hold a straight line and and be courteous.

3. Wear a helmet.

4. When you hear a car coming up behind you, glance behind you and look in their general direction. It seems like when I do this, cars will give me a wider berth when passing.

5. When you run across an aggressive or stupid driver, resist the urge to show your displeasure. It just adds fuel to the fire. Nowdays, whenever I get into a close call or some jerk yells at me, I do my best to keep my emotions contained and just ride on.

See you out on the road!

Heh, I like to shout "Drive Aloha!" but I'm a six foot tall haole dude, and people tend to think twice.

Oh, and Young Street is good if you can deal with the potholes.

That isn't true. If a few of us spoke up I bet it would happen. For instance, I could provide all sorts of specific info about where to bike, on or off road, in Hawai'i. I could provide info to people who would like to bike long or short distances while visiting here. A Hawai'i-specific subforum would collect all this information, and spur discussion, without it being diluted and lost into a larger unrelated subforum like this PNW one. Maybe it would even attract and retain new readers - I can think of some people who might like to know if there were a Hawai'i cycling forum.

1. I always wondered myself why Hawaii was grouped in the pacific Northwest forum, it took me a little looking around to find it the first time, I was looking for a Hawaii subforum sorta like how Texas has its own subforum too.

2. As for the biking situation in Honolulu, Id love to find out but I've got lack of shoulder / safety issues trying to get there from Mililani.

1. Are there enough Hawaii people to justify our own subforum? Oh well, at least they got us in the US.

2. Just how bad is it in town? I'll be moving back to Honolulu soon so I'm curious. Out on the Ewa side it's pretty good. No one has yelled at me yet and I don't get buzzed very often.

I think we have answered the question about enough need for a Hawaii subforum :) at least it says Pacific in the forum name.

Responses to the first 3

1. I actually road on all 3 of those roads today actually hehe. Cars didn't seem to mind so much as I kept my speed up. Though it wasn't rush hour so they were able to pass.

2. Yea, I really don't understand the whole ride in the opposite direction of traffic. I mean I understood the original idea of seeing what was comming at you but it still seems problematic.

3. Never have worn a helmet not sure if I will (though I really should). Even after going over my handlebars a few years back still didn't make me feel I needed a helmet.

I pray the city councel gives us the bike paths they've promised. :bang:

I agree, Im especially looking forward to the Mililani to Waipio, kipapa gulch path along the old Kamehameha hwy / military rd in that area.It is the OLD Kamehmeha Highway prior to 1933. Military used it to get to the Fuel depot and the Navy storage bunkers, the the military never owned the roadway. The state owns the roadway.

The conversion to bike path is unlikely to ever happen. State and City fighting on who should build (pay) for it.

And that is a shame, typical of state and City though.
