Mountain Biking - mild snow=good riding

Hey everyone, I'm not sure how many of you are in the northeast but here in long island, NY we have about 4 inches of snow. For me this is the perfect winter terrain. Everyone should go out riding then post some shots.

Well, we have a respite between snowstorms, and it is 56F, and even though the trails are a bit icy, I am out the door and onto the bike. Bye!

beautiful ride in snow that finally stayed ,8", downtown core by 9 am and it was lovely to ride in ,til the rain started hehhe i got all slushy.. but, not too many cars!

couldn't ride by the lake, visibility was so poor, but between the buildings downtown.. it was bliss. i love my mtn bike...

My ride was great! I ended up freeriding on the streets and trailsfor about an hour. I had a few falls when I misjudged snow ammounts but they didnt hurt because I was wearing many layers.

You had a lot more snow than I did - just a few icy spots on othertwise dry and plowed trails.

But, I had 1.5 hours of pure joy on my new bike!

yeah, it sucks that we don't get snow here.. no winter riding for me :D

Way cool. We had rain of all things. Not exactly typical for the nothern rockies this time of year.

well up here in the great state of maine we have got like 2 feet of snow and its unrideable and im going into a deep depresion do to the lack of riding. right now im wainting for the snowmoblie trails to be packed sown and grommed so i can at least go out for a ride. The only good thing about the snow is the snow banks (aka Jumps big jumps).

have ridden 18 miles last two days. I am pretty new to riding in snow but I have learned this. 18 miles in the snow = a LOT of miles on dry ground. I always wondered what that small sprocket on the front was for. :D

My first ventures into the snow were on the street. Riding on snow on the street is awful. I learned that riding on "virgin snow" is a different deal. It is waaaaaay better. Virgin snow is very predictable and a lot like riding in a steady head wind. Snow on the streets is like riding on marbles especially if it has ice underneath and lot of car tracks

I live in a part of Australia where there is no snow. But I was wondering what's it like riding in the snow? Is it as hard as you'd think? Because the way I look at it there would be hardly any traction on the harder snow, or it would be too soft and can hardly move.

Snow varies considerably, as does the temperature at which you might ride on it.

You have your wet, mushy snow.

You have your cold and icy snow.

You have your wet snow on top of ice.

You have your powdery, light snow.

You have your packed and hard snow.

They are all different for riding!
