I know front dérailleurs are specific for either double and triple chainrings, but are they also 8, 9 or 10-speed specific? For example, is the FD cage narrower to accommodate a narrower 9 or 10-speed chain? Inquiring minds want to know!

Yes they are, but the older wider derailleurs often work well with newer narrower chains and cranksets.

Unfortunately the newer narrower derailleurs don't work as well with older wider chains and cranksets, especially with triples.
