Younger (but not elite) riders on the Peninsula

Hi all! I'm new here and am trying to find a group of younger riders in the Palo Alto Area (SF to SJ) I am in town for the summer, home from College (20 y.o.) I'll be doing the Lake Tahoe century this weekend but am looking for suggestions of groups, clubs, or anyone who'd be interested in going on a ride. I did a few rides with Western Wheelers (I'm a "C" rider by their standards) this past week which was fun, but looking for some people closer to my age. I also did a Velogirls ride on sunday and will definitely be doing more of those! So.... any other suggestions? thanks!

I'm probably on about the same pace, did a WW C ride a few weeks ago and me and a couple of other guys ended up out front hauling pretty good. I'm always down to go exploring on the bike if you're interested.

But to answer your question about groups, I don't know of any rides specifically for younguns like you/us (not sure if I can still call myself young at 27 even though I just graduated 2 years ago).

You can always try some other clubs as well. Here are few in the area that I know of or have ridden with:

http://www.actc.org <-- Large variety of rides, schedules, open to all (sign waiver). Age? eh.. hit or miss really..

I know there is more out there, and probably some more specific to your requirements, but those are the ones that come to mind for me, mostly because they have a pretty "open to all" option at some point.

You may want to check out the local university teams (Stanford, Santa Clara), to see if they run open programs in the summer, or switch to "club" style operation.

I don't see too many "younger" riders since cycling usually takes a lot of $$.
College cycling clubs would be your best bet and Stanford would be right in Palo Alto.

Velogirls would be a good low pressure group to cycle with though I'm not sure of
the mix of ages. Same for the other bay area clubs mentioned above.

Even on our group rides there's a good mix of ages and abilities. Really just find
a ride/club/group that works for your schedule and go meet people and have fun.

Man, all this talk of younger riders makes me feel old. But then again, it's all about how young you feel. :)

Oh, and BTW, welcome to the group Becky.

I wouldn't recommend Alto Velo if comfortably consider yourself a WW C rider. I'm just letting you know from personal experience. A good gage is to see how long it takes you to climb Old La Honda. If you can do that climb in less than 30 minutes, then you're in good shape, and would be more of a D rider.

Also, keep your eyes peeled here ... sometimes I do post a last minute ride thread.

Velo Girls is probably your best bet.

The recreational clubs like Western Wheelers and ACTC do get some younger people on weekends. The average age on most of their rides is over 40, but they still will make you feel welcome.

Alto Velo and the like are pretty hard core (fast and competitive).

I think the Stanford Cycling Club (like most school clubs) is only open to students and faculty and maybe alumni.

I am going to be 25 in September and my girlfriend (Ruth) is 27.

You would probably take over my role as youngest in the Bikeforums group, but I never notice the age difference as a "compatibility inhibitor" on our rides.

You should come on a group ride with us. These guys/girls are some of the best people I've ever met, and it's a pleasure every time I ride with them.

Pete might pay you close attention for a while, but you'll get used to him ;)
