Bicycle Mechanics - kids bike ???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I got my son a Specialized Hotrock 20' coaster. He has been up on 2 wheels for a couple of months now with it. i think he will be ready for gear and hand brakes next summer.
Can i just upgrade the compnent s or am i looking at a new bike?

You'll spend much more upgrading it than the bike is worth. New bike.
I suggest you fit a hand brake on the Hotrock and let him get used to that action while still having coaster brakes. I did that on my sons Hotrock 16 and his Haro Outback came with both coaster and hand brakes on the rear as new.
When he is ready to step up to gears, start hitting the bike shops that take trades, or the consignment stores and I bet you can find him a second hand one with little use on it. This is what I did when my oldest son moved from 16 to 20" recently.
the 20" coaster comes with a rear handbrake. But if a SRAM (or similer) cassette and derailer are above 100. then that is correct a new bike.

It's not just cassette and derailer - you also need shifter, cable, and new rear wheel. New bike.
