Mountain Biking - Tell Me About My New Bike

Hi all,

My dad just came across a good deal (I hope) and picked it up. He found it at some place for $120 CDN.

I'm having trouble finding it on the 'net.


It is a TechTeam Striker 6000 with aluminum frame with front suspension of some sort and Shimano 21 speed gripshift (yes, I don't know a lot about bikes).


Someone tell me if it's good or crap, I can handle the truth. :o

So you're saying it's a custom bike right ?

I suspected that it is such.

Anyone heard of Tech Team though ? Are they reputable or not ?

They are not to my knowledge, 21 speed and Gripshift is a bit suspect.

can you tell us more.. try looking at the derailuers, crankarm, and other components.

Try if you can find a model, example Shimano Exage 300LX, or Shimano Deore XT, or Suntour...........

If these marking has been somehow erased, try looking for the part numbers; example FC-5000, FC-6501.......

if it's a new bike for $120 it's probably a dept store bike. but at least it's a bike just make sure everything is installed correctly and the bolts are tight and dont let it hinder you from riding.

My dad picked it up used for $120 from some place downtown. The frame says Tech Team Striker 6000, Shimano 21 speed, Aluminum but yes it's a gripshift. Why is it that I can't find any "Tech Team" bikes anywhere on the internet ?

But look at it this way, doesn't matter what you ride and how much it costs because sooner or later you'll want something else...usually more expensive. A friend of a friend has gone through about 3 mountain bikes in one year.

Admittedly, I often focus too much time and money on my bike than the actual ride which is really what it's about. That's really what the original spirit of MTB was when the guys in the 70's did homemade conversions on 10 speed racers for off-road use; it wasn't about who had the most expensive ride.

I don't mind that it's not the latest and greatest thing out there.
Even though I'm 22 yrs. old, I haven't been riding for that long.... just started last year actually, because I needed to learn how to balance on a bicycle in order to learn how to ride a motorcycle.

I just wanted to know more about this bicycle brand, because I have never seen or heard of it. I usually see brands like Huffy, Raleigh, K2, Cannondale, Nishiki etc. at the bike racks at the office tower where I work.

I find it strange that I can't find any bikes on the internet that are "TechTeam". From what I've come across on the 'net, I'm just going to assume that this bike is a custom one built with a TechTeam frame and that the quality is (a lot) lower than most bikes out there.

More than likely, this is a low end "department store" type bike. Pacific bikes makes a ton of these under a variety of different names (Huffy, Magna, etc.) to sell at a low cost for younger or less serious riders. The quality is definitely lower than bike store brand bikes such as Raleigh or Cannondale, but so is the price. They will do for learning basics or as a way of getting around short distances, but for doing serious riding, they come up short.

Assuming it is a department store bike, Striker 6000 may be a reference to the frame. AL 6061 is a common aluminum in low cost frames. Check on the rear derailuer and see if it says "SIS." That's Shimano's bottom-end, super mass produced derailuer. It will do the job, but is hard to adjust and not very smooth. Same for generic "gripshift" shifters.

If you begin to ride a fair amount, and especially if you ever have a chance to borrow a nicer ride, you'll find yourself wanting a better ride (happens to the best of us :D ). In the meantime, I hope it accomplishes what you want out of it.

You know, I've seen many a people on trails on department store bikes and they're perfectly content with it and riding well...better than me on my "designer bike". :o

Besides, there are things you can do to improve it for the time being while you save up for your dream bike: get good tires for sure, and you can even pick up a second-hand fork on the used market for cheap.

Use it, break it, and buy a new one...it's the happy product life cycle of MTB. :)

tech team is actaully a company that sells bikes out of toy'r'us in Canada. Those bikes are loaded with the Shimano Tourney components. Not bad for that price.
