I was playing battlefield online and then the power went out for about half a second, and the computer restarted. Since then, I can’t access my DSL internet. Right now I’m hitching off a neighbor’s internet router. Is this internet outage common? How do I fix it?

Edit: There was a bit of lightning outside

I used to have to shut mine down for a few min then restart, maybe the problem is becasue it went down for a second.

get a UPS battery if it's common around your place. My area has at least 1 brown out/1mo.

leave the power off on the dsl for a few mins.
If that doesn't work, call your ISP and get help from them, modem or line could be damaged.
I had a modem get fried by a brown out/lightning once.

Occasionally, my DSL (Qwest) quits working, but it came with software called "QuickCare" which tries to diagnose and fix the problem. Sometimes it tells me to turn off the modem, and then turn it back on again after a short interval.

Power cycle the DSL modem by unplugging it for about a minute, then plugging it back in. Give it a couple minutes to restart and reconnect. Sometimes brownouts confuse them.

If that doesn't work, go Network Connections in the control panel, select the appropriate card (wireless or ethernet) and click Repair.

If it doesn't work, call your provider. They'll probably make you go through these steps again before they move on. The joy of regimented customer support policies...

Also, stop posting on bikeforums. If you use Foo when the internet is out you can feed stray HTML back into their routers and cause fibrillations in the packet scheduler. That would be very bad.

go out for a long ride, then check it again.

Reboot the DSL router. That should work.

Type "ATZ" (followed by a carrier return) into your terminal application of choice (Terminate!) to reset the modem, and then use ATDT to reconnect. If you get a busy signal, type "A/".

Are you using a wireless connection, or are you using a phone line to the computer from the modem for the DSL connection?

If you answer this, I can most likely help you. I used to go through the same thing.

I use a UPS from American Power Conversions. (APC)

There are a number of reasons your internet may have gone out. Weather is a big factor, rain causes a lot of outages. Does your modem sync up to your ISP, if not it maybe the modem or the line quality is bad enough that your not able to sync.

Hm. I disconnected the router. Disabled that weird 1397 or whatever connection in the network connection subpanel, and kept LAN enabled. Wala! It worked!
