Fifty Plus (50+) - Can this be reasonable?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm blessed with a life and cycling companion who enjoys things bike related
But sending out a message to the cycling chums suggesting a 5.00 am start this weekend before the temperature gets high - well, I mean, that's a bit hardcore, no?
I accept that achievement is about mind over mattress, and all of that - but 5.00. On a weekend? I mean, really.
That's what you get, I suppose, with North Californian spouses for whom temperatures outside the 75 to 77 range starts the klaxons
(It's ok, go ahead, I've got my flame retardent shorts on);)

No flames here. 5AM is ridiculous.
You'd have a full hour of riding before you can even get a decent cup of coffee...

Last ride I did we were rolling at 4:10. But we knew it was going to be hot.
I always want to start earlier tan my sweet wife, who must have coffee and a good nights sleep. In teh summer, sun up is good for me, 7 or 8 for her.
Around here the wide kicks in early and I'd rather ride before it does.

I have lived most of my life having to take it on faith that the sun rises every morning, since I've hardly ever seen it actually happen.
Rise and Shine the days half done!
Well, I have gotten up and ridden earlier than that. But even I in my saner moments, realize that is a bit over the top. Did very many people agree with this start time? Even here in hot humid Orlando, groups don't start before 7 AM in the summer and we have much hotter weather.

I get up at 5:15a every morning for work. I will occasionally get up at that hour to go fishing only because I know the bite is better at sun up. The road, however, will still be there after a decent nights sleep and a couple of comfortable cups of coffee. AND I save money by not needing lights.
I thus think it is indeed not reasonable. Your complaint is valid.

Much hotter weather - blimey
46 C today, and 95% humidity. Hot fog. I've been in colder turkish baths. I'll hit 'delete' even faster now, to the sales people selling florida retirement homes!
Personally though, I like hot much more than Mrs G does. I remember my unfinished cups of tea, beside the bed in Yorkshire UK, being solid in the mornings. Hoh yea, warm, yipster;)
The best part of the day for me is between 8 pm and midnight, so 5 am is not part of the routine. I'm fortunate that I married a woman who has exactly the same natural clock.
That said, I have no problem, in fact do it enthusiastically, getting up early if it is for a good reason - as opposed to just out of habit or some mis-guided opinion that it reflects better character. Examples: hunting, starting a trip, going to work ... or if it were necessary, to get a good bike ride in. I live in a mild climate so, with rare exceptions, heat of the day is not a factor.

hmm methinks he might not have noticed where your signing in from. Bahrain is pretty damned extreme.

Well, when I used to live near Palm Springs, it was not considered rude to start lawnmowers at 7am in summer. You wanted to be done with the lawn chores by 9:00 or 10:00 AM because of the heat.
Of course, considering that sunrise in Bahrain apparently was 4:46AM today, Even DG could join you at 5AM, it being after sunrise. ;)
I don't know why you have to stay up all night partying till obscene hours like 8pm. ;) Get to bed early and get some sleep.

I agree 5:00 AM on a weekend is way too early. I get up at 5:15AM each day for work and want an extra hour or so of sleep on the weekends:)

It would have to be a good ride to be out by 5am- but come the height of the summer (Summer?) over here and I often wake up with the birds singing their heads off at 4 am. And one of the most memorable rides I did was when we left home at 2am to be up on the hills at Sunrise on mid summers day. Fantastic.
Mind you- With the temperatures you have over there- I would hate to be riding when it does get warm--let alone hot.
So 5am-- As long as there is a good breakfast by about 9am
The early bird gets the worm. The early rider gets the cool air. Early to bed, early to rise, makes me wish I'd stayed up with the other guys.
I can go either way. I too am an early riser but it has to be for a reason...

Contrary to DG's position I must confirm that the sun does indeed rise everyday...and I have for the last 30 years. I'm at work no later than 05:00 so when the weekend rolls around it's rise and shine as usual for me. :thumb:

In my young golfing days, I used to get up early and be at the golf course by 5:00 am to get on the waiting list, even in the chilling winter time.:(

We get up at 4:45 a.m. nearly every day. I teach a Spinning class at 6 and this gives me time to get my coffee and a bite to eat. On the days I don't teach I can peek at my email before my early meetings. In the summer I like to be on my bike by 6:30, while it's still cool and reasonable.
The dark mornings of winter make this a little less inviting; hearing the birds singing early is very inviting.
We try to sleep in but our dogs, creatures of habit that they are, insist we stick to the schedule. :notamused:

I don't mind getting up early if there's a good reason, but I'd rather not. Until this last year I always had to be at work at 7:00 and hated it. When we were pouring concrete, framing or roofing (during the summer) it wasn't unusual to start work at 5:00, but then we were off work by 2:00 in the afternoon so that helped ease the pre-dawn shock. A 5:00 or 6:00 tee time or bike ride is acceptable occasionally, but not as a steady diet.

One of the advantages of being old is that I can go to sleep at or before 9pm. Then I can get up long before everyone else does in the morning.
This means more time in the shop or on the bike before the todo list wakes up.

Absolutely right. I can sometimes get in a 40 mile ride before the rest of the house wakes up!

I think that people are divided into larks and owls. Larks like those 5:00 AM rides and owls don't.

5 am start is not gonna happen with me. If forced, I'd probably just stay awake since my normal bed time is 2am. I always thought I was a night owl because I was actually born at 10:32 pm.

I have a good riding buddy who has one fatal flaw; he wants to get up and ride in the middle of the night. He wants to go at six, I say nine, we compromise at eight. Then he wonders why he gets so tired by mid afternoon. Darn kids, anyway.

During the week - this time of year I will get up at 4:45 and be out by 5:30AM for a 90 min ride before work (not every day mind you). It is tough to do. My riding buddies and I will ride at 6:00AM during the week as well. But as for the weekends, starting at 7:00AM is as extreme as it gets for me. Living where you do though, I can see where 5:00AM would have it's appeal.

5am is pretty early but when I lived South of Houston, TX we would start tennis at 7 am to beat the heat in the summer. Done with a case of beer and some tennis games by 10 am.
