start by saying what kind of pedals and shoes you have and what you would like to have in a shoe / pedal.

as far as pedals go, I cannot reccomend the Time ATAC enough. Same basic concept as the egg beaters, with much better bearings.
as fas shoes, get something that fits, and a good stiff sole. If you will be racing, inserts for toe spikes will be nice. Its really hard to reccomend shoes, because fit is so important you really want to try them on.
Well, I've done alot of research and was also looking for a good mix of quality/durability at a lower price and finally settled on this combo:
Look Quartz pedals (similar to Time Atacs, but lighter).
Sidi Bullet Mesh shoes.
got the pedals for 77$ and the shoes for 129$. :thumb:
I know Time ATACs get alot of good reviews and the Crank Bros Egg beaters too, but I wanted to try something different. As for the shoes, well, sidis just rock... :)
Love my shimano PD-M959's... although I don't think they make them anymore you can still find them here and there (not cheap though unless you find a deal). Shoes I like lake & specialized personally.
I'm running Crank Brothers Candies and Adidas Durango shoes at moment and am quite happy with both. I switched over from ATACs this year. Mainly it was for compatibility with the Mallets on my MTB, but so far I've also found the candies to have smoother entry and exit. Last year I was occasionally getting jamming problems with the ATACs when I had a lot of sand mixed in with the thick Iowa mud. Only one real problem getting unclipped from that, but it was at an inopportune time...
I'm a newbie, but after doing some research, ended up with Crank Bros. Candy pedals (my bike is like yours, except it's a Comp, not an Expert). I didn't really want to get road pedals and slip around too much when walking in road shoes. Found the pedals new on ebay for $40. Tried on a bunch of shoes and loved the Sidis. Of course they are expensive. Found a new pair in my size on ebay for $130 (Sidi Dominator). I did spend an inordinate amount of time scouring the net for the shoes, since I really liked the Sidis but felt guilty spending $200+ for bike shoes.
The cleats required a bit of tweaking to get them to be easy to snap into. Twisting out of them is very easy. The shoes are really comfortable, and I would think on longer rides uncomfortable shoes would be a real drag.
Good luck! Maybe you can find nice shoes on closeout at a LBS that are last year's model (who cares?).
